DESCRIPTION: The course will focus on continuing practice in reading, listening, speaking, writing and grammatical understanding of Hindi/Urdu. The course assumes that students have completed Elementary Hindi-Urdu or the equivalent. If you are entering the course without this background, you might want to buy a copy of *Teach Yourself Hindi* (Snell andWeightman) from the bookstore and speak with the instructor. This is the main first-year text and provides a solid grammatical overview of the language that is assumed in the intermediate class. Students will learn through traditional as well as unconventional materials. We will role-play authentic situations in the classroom and participate in various communicative tasks. At the end of the course you will be able to successfully handle most uncomplicated communicative tasks and social situations. You will be able to initiate, sustain, and close a general conversation. You will be able to write letters and short compositions and read consistently with full understanding simple connected texts dealing with personal and social needs. You will be able to get the main ideas and information from texts featuring description and narration. Although this is a four-unit course and will require a real time commitment, it is taught at the *undergraduate* level. Graduate students and others who want to move faster or work more intensively should consult the instructors about supplementary materials.
TEXTS: We will use two kinds of texts: (1.) Intermediate Hindi Reader by Usha Jain and Karine Schomer, available at CU bookstore( 2.) *Authentic Materials for Developing Reading Comprehension in Hindi*, and *Authentic Materials for Developing Listening Comprehension in Hindi.* These materials should be purchased from Village Copier, Broadway and 111th street. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Anyone in the university is welcome to enroll; no background is needed. Hindi/Urdu is an easy, straightforward, beautiful language. This course will teach you basic oral Hindi/Urdu and written Hindi, prepare you for further work in Hindi and/or Urdu, and clarify for you the interesting and complex relationship between Hindi and Urdu. We will work on all the skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. (You will learn the Urdu
script as part of the second-year class; or you may learn it sooner if you wish.) This course is time-intensive, but is taught on an *undergrad* level; students who want to work more quickly or intensively may speak with the instructors about supplementary materials.
Although each section will have a different principal teacher (see above for list), all three sections will use the same textbook, homework assignments, and exam structure, and will be judged as a single group for grading purposes. This means that if you cannot make your regular section, you may arrange to drop in on another. There will be some team-teaching also, and some sessions will be held in a different room where AV equipment is available. You will be told about all such arrangements in class.
In this course the grading will break down as follows:
Homework: 30% Written Quiz:40%
Class performance: 15%. Class perfomance means: (1) regular class attendance and full participation; and (2) 12 hours of language lab work in the course of the semester.
Oral:15% There will be no final exam. 4th quiz will be final quiz which will be comprehensive.
REQUIREMENTS:
TEXTBOOKS -- TEACH YOURSELF HINDI, by R. Snell and S. Weightman, will
be the main text. The first nine units of this book will be covered in the first semester and the rest in second semester. It is in the CU bookstore. You should definitely buy it without delay. You must also buy the Hindi dictionary by Rupert Snell
There is also a READING PACKET available from Village Copier (111th st. & Broadway.) This is the “Elementary Hindi-Urdu” packet and is required material so you should buy it as soon as possible.
Copies of a number of other relevant texts, including suitable dictionaries, are on reserve in Library; these texts will be discussed in class, and you will have an annotated list of them. This list and some other basic materials for the class are included in the reading packet.
There are other materials, including dictionaries (both Hindi-English and English-Hindi), in the CU bookstore; these are supplementary and are there for students' convenience and interest, but are not required. We do, however, urge you to obtain at least one dictionary, as this will help you through the language learning process.
LANGUAGE LAB -- In the language lab (Lewiston Hall, 1st floor) you will find a full list of the Hindi and Urdu audio and video materials available in the lab; some audio-videos correspond to our class work, while most are supplementary or for general background. You may listen to any of these on the list, but you MUST spend twelve hours using the language lab (no more than ONE hour at a stretch!) in the course of the semester. You will need to SAVE YOUR LAB SLIPS and hand them in at the end of the semester. You will also be expected to do the computerized drills Dr. Bedi has prepared; they are available in the lab.
You are welcome to borrow films from Hindi video club housed in our office, 609 Kent Hall.
Visit your class's website at http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/w1610/.
Go to www.columbia.edu/~sb12 for information on Hindi-Urdu lab. Materials, reserve materials in the Butler Library and other important websites relevant to your class.
ASSIGNMENTS -- There will be a homework assignment every class day, which will be due in, the next class unless otherwise directed. (You MUST make sure that you are on our email list and that you read your email regularly.
NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED-It may be corrected but will not receive any grade.
If you have any problems over the course of the semester we urge you to come and speak with one of us as soon as possible.
Please fill out the last page of this syllabus and hand it to your instructor.
