presentPresidentisMissEstherOgden,isoneoftheimportantauxiliariesoftheNational

AmericanSuffrageAssociation’swork.Ithasprovedsosuccessfulasabusinesspropositionthat

inJanuaryofthisyear,aftertwoyearsofwork,itdeclaredadividendof3percent.This

publishingcompanyissuesfliers,leaflets,books,posters,andsuffragemaps.Incidentally,it

produces,asanadjunctofthepropagandawork,playingcards,stationerywith“Votesfor

...Atthesemeetings[aboutthetreatmentofAfricanAmericansonbuses],wediscussednot

onlythetwowomenwhohadbeenarrested,butalsoanumberofadditionalbusincidentsthat

neverfoundtheirwayintocourt,nodoubtbecausethevictimswereblackpassengers.Severalof

thewhitedriversweredeterminedtoharassourpeopleateveryopportunity.Forexample,when

thebuswasevenslightlycrowded,theywouldmakeblackspaytheirfare,thengetoff,andgoto

thebackdoortoenter.Sometimestheywouldeventakeoffwithasquealasapassengertrudged

towardtherearafterpaying.Atleastonceadriverclosedthebackdooronablackwoman’sarm

andthendraggedhertothenextstopbeforeallowinghertoclimbaboard.Clearlythiskindof

gratuitous[unnecessary]crueltywascontributingtoanincreasingtensiononMontgomerybuses.

Wetriedtoreasonwithlocalauthoritiesandwithbuscompanyofficials.Theywerepolite,listened

toourcomplaintswithseriousexpressionsontheirfaces,anddidnothing.

OnDecember1,1955,Mrs.Parkstookhernow-famousbusrideandseteventsinmotionthat

wouldleadtoasocialrevolutionofmonumentalproportions....
