Instructions for Histology Lab: Epithelial Tissue

  1. All drawings must be done on graph paper or in composition book with graph paper.
  2. The title for this lab is Epithelial Tissue and goes at the top of page one.
  3. No more than 2 drawings per page.
  4. Draw/write on only the front of the page (not double-sided).
  5. Fold your page down the middle (hot dog). Place the drawings and labels on the left side and the written part (description, function, location) on the right side of the page.
  6. All drawings must be done in pencil; all writing/labeling must be done in black ink.
  7. Draw a circle representing your field of vision, look into the microscope, and draw what you see inside your circle.
  8. Above each drawing, write the name of the tissue you are working on: simple squamous, stratified cuboidal, etc.
  9. Color all drawings.
  10. When labeling different structures in/on the cell tissue, be sure that your indicator lines are straight (use a ruler) and do not intersect each other.
  11. The tissues you must draw are listed below with what you must label on each of the drawings. The drawings must be in this order in your lab. You can begin drawing at any station but when finished, they must be in this order.

1)simple squamous epithelium—nucleus, simple squamous cell

2)simple cuboidal epithelium—simple cuboidal cell, basement membrane, connective tissue

3)simple columnar epithelium—simple columnar epithelial cell, basement membrane, connective tissue

4)pseudostratified epithelium—pseudostratified epithelial layer, basement membrane, connective tissue, cilia

5)nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium—stratified squamous epithelium, nucleus, basement membrane, connective tissue

6)keratinized stratified squamous epithelium—keratinized layer of dead cells, stratified squamous epithelium, nucleus, basement membrane, connective tissue

7)transitional epithelium (relaxed)—transitional epithelium, basement membrane, connective tissue

8)transitional epithelium (distended)—transitional epithelium, basement membrane, connective tissue

  1. For each drawing you must write out and fill a Description, Function, and Location (in that order) of each tissue. You will find this information in your textbook: pp. 117-119
  2. When you are through you should have eight drawings.
  3. Spread out and be patient. It does not matter which tissue you begin draw first.
  4. Remember, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS BE NEAT!!!
