An Education Summit for Wayne County’s Future

Tuesday, October 9, 2007 (7:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m.)

“Responsibilities exist in every community but rarely form effective networks. They come from all sectors and all backgrounds and are committed individually and collectively to furthering their purposes in the public arena with tough minded skill and effectiveness. They must find each other, learn to communicate, and find common ground. Only then can they function as the keepers of the long-term and common agenda.” John Gardner

What are our unique opportunities and challenges?

“The greatest challenge facing Richmond/Wayne County is to make a quantum leap in the expectation of employers, community leaders, and the population at large regarding the level of knowledge and skill necessary for all youth and adults to enter the workforce, be employed, pursue postsecondary education, or engage in lifelong learning.” NCHEMS Report May, 2001

“You’ve got to think about big things while you’re doing small things, so that all the small things go in the right direction.” Alvin Tofler

The audience will be divided into five mixed groups - one group per leak point. Given the three pieces of information discussed; local challenges, Morse’s leverage points, and clarified leak points, as a basis for the discussion; participants will report what they are doing to plug leak points; discuss what is not being done; and brainstorm what could be done but isn’t? Each group will report three or four stellar ideas and examples.

11:00 Entities work as groups to make their plans based on what they heard.
