D.E.E.R. CHAPERONES
WHY: The Derry Township Environmental Education Retreat is an outdoor education program for sixth graders here at HersheyMiddle School. DEER is seeking out parents who are willing to volunteer 2-½ days of their busy lives to chaperone our trip at CampKenbrook.
WHO: We need parents who can handle the rigor of hiking on a variety of terrains from 6am – 10pm; are able to stay awake until the students go to sleep; are able to keep order within a group; are willing to be an active participant in the student learning experience; are willing to concentrate on students in your group; are willing to work with other people’s children.
WHEN: May 18th – 20th

Houtz, Hugendubler, Mack, Mullikin, Umberger & Warfel
May 20th– 22nd
Homerooms:
Dailey, Delaney, Frankeny, Ogle, Templeton & Szeerba
Overnight chaperones
Your responsibilities include:
- Stay at camp for the ENTIRE 2 ½ day session.
(Trade-offs with spouses or other parents cannot occur.)
- Guide groups from one activity to another.
- Monitor student behavior at meals.
- Read the Secret Traveler clues during meals.
- Help students to pay attention and behave well during lessons.
- Help distribute snacks and serve food.
- Help supervise students in their rooms.
- Provide TLC to students as the need arises.
COST: The total fee this year is $87 per person. The school district pays the total cost for all students. Overnight parent chaperones are asked to pay half: $43.
CLEARANCES: As per the new volunteer requirements, any parent wishing to participate would need to obtain the necessary clearances (child abuse & criminal record checks), as well as have a TB test. Feel free to visit Mr. Warfel’s website @ for more information.

* Selected chaperones will be notified in writing in early January and a CHAPERONEmeeting will be held in April to discuss necessary paperwork as well as chaperone expectations.
* There will be a GENERAL informational parent meeting inApril. All are invited to attend. We will explain the itinerary the students will follow while at camp, as well as define the items to pack and items to leave at home.
