This Week’s News

Hi All,

I hope you’re enjoying ourrecent spring-like weather

Last week was a BUSY one in Room 108. I bet you had a tired first or second grader by Friday afternoon! On Monday, we met and worked with Santiago and Kelly (Junior Achievement volunteers). The students enjoyed learning about a variety of business and government jobs and how taxation supports government services. They reviewedthe difference between “wants” and “needs,” and “goods” and “services.” We talked about products and efficient production. Finally, we had a great time playing the “Money Matching Game.”

On Tuesday, as a follow-up to our JA Day, students surveyed their classmates to determine the most popular kind of donut hole in Room 108 (sugar and powdered)! We used this data to create tally charts, bar graphs, and recommendations for future donut-hole producers. We also reflected on all of our new learnings with Santiago and Kelly and wrote thank you notes.

As the week continued, we shifted our focus to small businesses, our own “Little Farms.” We continued our research by learning about a small, family-run, goat dairy, and sheep farmers who focus primarily on wool production. New vocabulary included: shepherd, lamb, drylot, herding vs guarding dogs, and wool. Students determined how many of each type of animal to include on their farms, purchased the required amount of pasture land and fencing using “farm bucks.”

As part of our morning meetings, students continued to review and practicemoney math games. Weeven added a new one, “Monster Money,” to the mix.

On Friday, we attended the All School Morning Meeting where we watched an engaging play designed to teach us about selling plants for the annual Barton Plant Sale. The sale kicked off on Friday (March 3) and runs through April 12. Completed green order forms should be returned to the classroom with payments. Online orders are also most welcome (please review your child’s packet) and due by April 12. Each first and second grade classroom has been given a goal of $3,500! Whew! We have our work cut out for us.

On Friday afternoon, the kids reviewed a set of Scholastic book order forms. If you’re interested in ordering, please complete by Friday, March 10. This will allow time for the books to arrive before Spring Recess.

As always, thank you for your communication and support and have a great week!
