Starr Columbus hosting trauma training for youth professionals
COLUMBUS, OHIO – Starr Columbus, formerly known as the Hannah Neil Center for Children, is hosting a three-day trauma-informed training ideal for those who work closely with traumatized youth.
Educators, child care workers, social workers, therapists, school counselors, psychologists, juvenile courts, foster care families and more will benefit from this level one trauma training designed to make them more effective at understanding kids with trauma issues related to abuse, neglect, loss and other traumatizing events.
The Child and Adolescent Trauma Recovery and Resilience training is presented by The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC™) and will be held Aug. 18-20 at the Bob Evans Training Center, 3776 S. High St., Columbus. Training times will be from 9 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. each day.
“We feel it is important to share with other agencies and youth professionals the same trauma-informed care training that we have adopted into our treatment at Starr Commonwealth,” said Lisa Lambert, Executive Director of Starr Columbus, 301 N. Obetz Road. “TLC’s trainings help you understand grief, loss and pain in children and provides the strategies needed to effectively help these children not just survive, but thrive.”
TLC Founder and Director Bill Steele, PsyD, MSW, will lead participants through trauma-informed practices and principles, structured sensory interventions and more. Professionals who attend will become equipped with the tools and resources needed to adequately assess and develop trauma interventions.
“Neuroscience confirms that trauma is not a cognitive experience,” said Steele. “It is a ‘sensory/implicit’ experience that drives that child’s behaviors - behaviors that cannot be changed by cognitive interventions alone. TLC’s published evidence-based interventions provide those ‘sensory/implicit’ experiences that support recovery and resilience.”
Register now by calling 614-491-5784, ext. 5255 or online at www.starrtraining.org/register. The cost to attend is $275 before Aug. 1, or $315 after Aug. 1.
After the training, professionals who wish to become certified as a Trauma and Loss Specialist can do so by completing a written essay and two online courses at their own pace. Professionals in need of continuing education credits can obtain 18 CEUs for an additional $60.
TLC™ is a program of the Starr Institute for Training. It provides professionals with the resources and support needed to work with traumatized children, while also allowing them to obtain training and certification. More than 5,000 people have become certified since 1995, and there currently are more than 3,000 schools, agencies and professionals across the country utilizing TLC intervention programs.
