  As legal assistant I draft: answers to interrogatories, no-fault arbitration petitions and discovery, summons, complaints, marital termination agreements, minor settlement agreements, and various other correspondence as needed.

January 2008-December 2008 Hedberg Maps, Inc. Minneapolis, MN

Production Assistant

  Hedberg Maps, Inc. is a small cartography firm that specializes in custom cartography products and has a small line retail maps.

  While at Hedberg Maps, I was responsible for data research for upcoming projects, proofing and verifying data on existing maps, and creating various maps. I helped set up and initiate the use of a GIS station and was primarily responsible for the GIS work at the firm.

  I was involved in many projects over the year; I researched, created databases, and produced college and high school locator maps for the Twin Cities Youth Sports Atlas. I updated and formatted several Dex phonebook maps and retail city street reference maps.

  While working in the GIS computer lab I assisted GIS students with homework and map production. Troubleshooting technical problems with ArcGIS and assisting students with map layout and design were frequent aspects of my days in the lab.

Teaching Assistant for Introduction to GIS and Cartography

  I assist students with homework, help create and discuss lecture plans with the professors, and lead discussions about current GIS issues. During the professors’ absence, I instructed the students in their GIS lab assignments, while also troubleshooting and assisting them with their final projects. This included collecting census data, converting Excel files and dbf files to Microsoft Access files. I also assisted with grading student lab assignments and maps.

GIS project for St. Paul Department of Education

  During my junior year at Macalester, I was enrolled in an advanced GIS course, GIS: Concepts and Applications. This course was a collaboration project with St. Paul’s Second Shift Initiative and St. Paul Public School district. My responsibilities included collecting information on after-school programs in St. Paul then compiling and managing a database of these programs. I also was responsible for organizing and creating the formal presentation for the Mayor of St. Paul, Chris Coleman.

Senior Capstone Article

  For my senior capstone, I wrote an article entitled Make It Happen: Fundamentals of Cooperative Community Development Projects that was part of a collaborative geography department project, The Crow River Watershed: An Annotated Atlas. The article was about the community’s process of replacing an old traditional dam with a fish ladder in Hutchinson, MN.

April 2008 Introductory Elementary-level GIS Tutorial St. Paul, MN

Personal Project

  I created a two-part GIS tutorial for a fourth grade student; the first part was to familiarize the student with maps types and spatial representation and the second was hands-on GIS. During the tutorial the student learned how to add shapefiles and data tables to an Arc document, how to geocode and introduced the basics of visual hierarchy.
