NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde: Clyde Sector

Clyde sector have a range of Band 5 registered nurse vacancies across a range of specialties on the 3 acute sites within the sector. These 3 acute sites – RoyalAlexandraHospital, InverclydeRoyalHospital and the Vale of Leven Hospital are looking for highly motivated and committed registered nurses to work within the sector. We are keen to welcome nurses with a passion for their chosen specialty and previous experience in any of these specialities is desirable although not essential.

We require enthusiastic registered nurses with a can do attitude that have the ability to work within our friendly ward teams. The nursing staff work closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and pride themselves on delivering a high standard of person centred care and effective discharge planning for our patients.

The successful candidate will have a genuine desire to become part of the multi professional team and care for the patients within the chosen specialty. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills and act as role model to the rest of the team and the nursing students who are frequently placed on the ward.

Commitment to undertake ongoing in-service training and development is essential. You should be motivated, keen to learn and ready to embrace change. Many of our clinical areas have a dedicated Nurse Educator who facilitates training on a regular basis. Our commitment to you is to provide the environment for this to happen. The RAH and IRH are busy district general hospitals that have the great advantage of being compact enough to enjoy close working relationships across the hospital specialties, with friendly and welcoming staff, giving a real sense of ownership and inclusion.

Our Allied Health Professional Teams are well aligned with our in-patient services, providing seven day physiotherapy and occupational therapy input. The departments are actively developing a range of specialist and advanced nursing roles such as Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Specialists, and Elderly Care Assessment Nurses, to work alongside the multi professional teams.

Vale of LevenHospital

The Vale of Leven Hospital serves a population circa 80,000 with its catchment extending from Dumbarton to Lochgoilhead. The provision of care is complex with a number of specialities providing in patient, day case and out-patient services from the site based on a model introduced in 2010 following consultation on the Boards Vision for the Vale document. An improvement in technology, supported by the extended skills of the workforce has afforded the Board the opportunity to redesign and modernise service delivery on the site.

The model of care comprises of a Minor Injuries Unit, Medical Assessment Unit, a 12 bed Acute Receiving Unit and a 27 bed Medical Ward. Patients presenting with a variety of medical conditions are investigated and treated within the medical unit. The nursing experience is therefore extremely varied and not concentrated on one particular speciality.

There are also 41 beds across the tow Older People wardsand 1 Older Adult Day Hospital. Ward 14 specialises in stroke rehabilitation and Ward 15 in orthopaedic rehabilitation.

The Care of the Elderly directorate allows nurses to gain valuable experience whilst supporting patients and their families as they cope with multi conditions and complex issues.

Emergency Care

The service within the RAH and IRH sites have approximately 300 presentations through the Emergency Department and Medical Assessment Unit daily. The RAH and IRH have 30 Acute receiving beds within the acute medical unit that support the receiving unit. Patients are then admitted routinely or via emergency care to speciality medical wards including respiratory, rheumatology, haematology, cardiology, specialist Gastro-enterology and diabetic services.

Within Emergency Care a rotational skills programme is offered to enhance learning and retain staff members. Access to ANP and further training, Quality initiatives and patient focussed care is at the forefront of training and support. As part of the “Facing the Future together” programme our receiving unit has been nominated and won the Staff awards for Excellence in 2016 and 2017.

Medical Specialties

There are 10 Medical Specialty wards across the RAH and IRH sites and a Coronary care Unit within RAH. Patients are transferred to downstream medical specialty wards from emergency care areas to continue with investigations, ongoing treatments and rehabilitation. Medical specialties comprise of respiratory, gastroenterology, endocrine, cardiology, rheumatology and haematology wards. Medical specialties supports a rotational programme for newly qualified nurses within the RAH. This provides a valuable opportunity for enhanced learning and support to NQNs. We strive to provide patient centred care ensuring patient safety.

Older People and Stroke

The Older People and Stroke service consists of 290 inpatient beds across the 3 acute sites within the sector. There are stroke units on both the RAH and IRH sites which looks after patients with acute stroke through to rehabilitation.

The Older Peoples wards cover acute medicine for the elderly, older adult assessment unit, orthopaedic rehabilitation and general rehabilitation with an interest in movement disorder.

There are Older Adult Day Hospitals on each of the 3 sites which provide an essential interface between primary and secondary care. Managing them timeously through DayHospital is an alternative to admission in many cases.

There are a range of Clinical Nurse Specialists in Stroke, Movement Disorder, Older Peoples Mental Health along with Elderly Care Assessment Nurses and Advanced Nurse Practitioners who all form part of the wider nursing and multi professional teams to provide high quality person centred care for older people.

The RAH service also has a Practice Educator in post who provides excellent support and training tailored to both the specialty and the individual nurse to maximise learning and development within the service.

General Surgery

The General Surgical Wards within Clyde are spread across two sites, RAH and IRH. These include our new Surgical and Receiving Unit (SARU), Colorectal, Urology, Surgical Palliative Care and Same Day Admission Unit. Within the surgical specialities there are dedicated CNS services that are available to support and develop ward staff. Specialities include Colorectal cancer, Enhanced Recovery, Nutrition, Urology, Stoma and Surgical Nurse Practitioners (SNP’s).

Orthopaedics

The orthopaedic service within the sector Clyde is divided over the three acute hospital sites the RAH, IRH and VOL. The service provides elective and trauma expertise for a large demographic and includes 105 beds with the support of three fracture clinics and pre-op assessment clinics. Our service is also supported by a dynamic Trauma Liaison team who see all trauma patients to ensure pathways are met.

The wards include elective surgery with sub-speciality including foot and ankle and upper limb surgery. We also have six beds for head injury patients with 52 beds dedicated to trauma admissions. Orthopaedics support our NQN’S with a dedicated programme supported by local PEFs and our practice development team. There are excellent opportunities for nurse learning and training with our close links with UWS.

Critical care

Critical care within the Clyde sector includes ICU and HDU on the RAH site and ICU, HDU and CCU beds on the IRH site. We care for patients within critical care who require single organ support with enhanced observations up to and including more than one organ support +/- mechanical ventilation support. A varied range of specialities surgical, medical, cardiology, orthopaedic, urology and gynaecology allowing clinical exposure to a wide variety of scheduled and unscheduled care patient groups. MDT working with patient centred care planning/ delivery as our main focus to optimise our patient’s outcomes. Professional growth and development is key for all our staff with all units offering additional support of a Practice Educator. Staff are supported with a competency based workbook, mentor allocation and rotational opportunities within the critical care units. Critical care nursing is an excellent choice whether you are starting your career or wishing to further develop/enhance your learning as you develop as a nurse.

Dermatology

Dermatology is largely an ambulatory care service delivered across all NHSGG&C sites. We also have in-patient beds in QEUH within a mixed specialty shared with Acute Medicine.

We offer fantastic opportunity for development of skills and knowledge within the specialty delivering a wide range of skin care to our patients. This includes ultra violet light therapy and treatments for common skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Dermatology is an excellent area for career development for newly qualified and more experienced registered practitoners. We actively support staff with an extensive induction programme with a focus on developing tailor made opportunities for increasing staff skills from novice to expert. We have a regular Education Forum designed to help further build confidence and practical skills for all grades of nurses.

We are striving to make the service increasingly nurse led which allows our staff to broaden use of autonomous skills leading to being able to perform minor surgery and run independent chronic disease management clinics.
