A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MRS. VELMA H. MAYER OF ANDERSON COUNTY ON THE REMARKABLE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are very pleased to learn that Mrs. Velma H. Mayer of Anderson County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on July 7, 2004; and

Whereas, birthdays are joyous occasions to be shared with one’s family and friends, and the members of the General Assembly are honored to recognize this very special day on which Mrs. Mayer will celebrate one hundred years of a full and wonderful life; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mayer was born on July 7, 1904, just after the dawn of the twentieth century, and as this century has brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Velma Mayer has been there to witness all of them; and

Whereas, Velma Mayer was born in Gadsden, Alabama, and is a 1924 graduate of Converse College; and

Whereas, in 1924 she was united in holy matrimony to the late Luther Voigt Mayer, a 1924 graduate of Wofford College, and with whom she shared seventy years of marital bliss. She has one daughter, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren and is the true matriarch of her loving family who is beloved by all; and

Whereas, for twentyfour years she was employed as a school teacher and librarian; and

Whereas, Mrs. Mayer attends St. John’s United Methodist Church and Sunday school where she is a former Sunday school teacher and circle leader; and

Whereas, she is a Life Member of the Anderson County Woman’s Club who enjoys her family and friends, cooking, working puzzles, reading, television quiz shows, and playing bridge; and

Whereas, Mrs. Velma H. Mayer is admired and known for her devotion to family, hard work, and service to others. She is the backbone of her family and a beacon of strength and dignity in her community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Mrs. Velma H. Mayer of Anderson County on the remarkable occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her continued good health and much happiness in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Velma H. Mayer.
