BACKGROUND
The Public Advocacy section in the Division of Communication (DOC) builds UNICEF’s evidence-based messaging, and helps shape the advocacy arguments to best position issues for children on the global public agenda. The Research and Editorial team in Public Advocacy researches, writes and oversees the design of public advocacy content - including Progress for Children and The State of the World’s Children reports. The team also advises the organization on leveraging editorial products for public and policy advocacy purposes and works closely with other units in developing related communications content. It also provides guidance to the organization on how to engage with influencer to advance common advocacy objectives.
PURPOSE
The Public Advocacy section in UNICEF’s Division of Communication is looking for candidates to join our roster of consultants for potential upcoming assignments related to UNICEF’s priorities and mandate to serve all children, particularly the most vulnerable. We are looking for a variety of candidates with experience and skillset in public advocacy, such as in writing/editing, development of communication strategies and messaging, and outreach. S/he will support public advocacy and communication activities around a range of themes/priorities, such as child survival, education, protection, social inclusion, among others.
DELLIVERABLES
The consultancy may include some of many of the following components:
- Develop and implement public advocacy and communication strategies, particularly around campaigns, including narratives, messaging, audience analysis, and material production for key priorities.
- Write, develop and edit content for communication materials.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external colleagues.
- Conduct outreach to key influencers.
- Interact with project managers, staff, team members and vendors as appropriate.
- Provide monitoring and evaluation updates and reports as needed.
- Travel as needed.
- Other activities as assigned.
- May be requested to work on weekends and holidays.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
Required:
•Excellent English writing and editing skills.
•Minimum 5-8 years of experience in advocacy or communication, writing/editing.
•Detail-oriented, creative, and able to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
•Experience in development essential, field experience a plus.
•Experience with issues related to child rights.
•Strong organizational and detail-oriented skills.
•Understanding and use of social media tools and platforms.
•Understanding and knowledge of UNICEF's work is desired, experience working in the United Nations a plus.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with publications processes and working on major institutional reports
- Knowledge of another UN language, preferably French or Spanish, is desirable.
- Understanding of and experience with international development issues
