Purpose

This qualification recognises the skills and knowledge required for employment as a tour guide either during an excursion or within an attraction.

People awarded this qualification are able to provide a range of services such as interpretation while on the excursion or within the attraction, attend to administrative tasks, and manage the health and safety of the group.

This qualification is designed to be delivered in conjunction with the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 0876], which provides the core skills to support the technical skills contained in this qualification. However, that qualification must be awarded prior to this qualification.

Replacement Information

This qualification and the National Certificate in Tourism (Tour Leadership) [Ref: 0902] have been replaced by the National Certificate in Tourism (Tour Guiding) with an optional strand in Extended Tour Guiding [Ref: 1518].

This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Tourism (Attraction Guiding) [Ref:0307].

Special Notes

Open. People may commence training and assessment towards this qualification without having been awarded the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3) [Ref: 0876]. However, they will not be awarded this qualification until they have been awarded the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level 3).

This qualification will be awarded to people who have been awarded the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel (Core Skills) (Level3) [Ref:0876], and who meet the requirements of the core compulsory and core elective sections, and one of the strands, of this qualification.

Previous versions of the qualification

Version 2 was updated and issued following the reclassification of the Retail and Wholesale, and Service Sector Skills unit standards.

Changes to structure and content

  • Subfield of Retail, Distribution, and Sales added to Elective 2.

There are no transition implications of this change.

Version 1 replaced the National Certificate in Tourism (Attraction Guiding) [Ref:0307], which was reviewed in July2001 and found to no longer meet industry needs. It is expiring and is no longer registered on the National Qualifications Framework.

People working towards the previous qualification may choose to complete that qualification or transfer to this qualification. People choosing to complete the previous qualification must do so by 31July2003. The last date for award of the previous qualification was 31December2003.

The industry will continue to recognise the expiring qualification.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.
