Description: Develops a comprehensive medical vocabulary applicable to all specialties of medicine, through the learning of Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, root words and combining forms. Training in the spelling, pronunciation and definitions of medical terms is provided.

Proposed Syllabus: (may be changed)

Materials suggested:

  1. - 1” notebook for homeworkand quizzes as well as in-class exercises
  2. 3 “Sharpies” black, blue and red
  3. Notebook paper
  4. Optional: audio recorder, mp3 player
  5. Please bring some kind of reference source for completing in-class exercises such as a book, iphone or computer

Grading Policy:

Academic Dishonesty: The College has a strict Policy on Academic Dishonesty.

Cheating will not be tolerated in any form. Theft has a hefty penalty!

Consequences of Cheating and/or stealing: Penalties will be a zero on the quiz or exam being taken at the time of cheating. In addition, other penalties for violations of the Student code of Conduct may be imposed by the Vice President of Student Services. Penalties may include: reprimand, restitution charges for damaged or misappropriated property, disciplinary probation, disciplinary suspension or expulsion from the college.

You are responsible for withdrawing from the class. If you are still attending after the first week, I will not lie about your attendance in class so that you can get a refund of your enrollment fee. If you are still enrolled after the scheduled last date of withdrawal, you will receive a grade!

Attendance: If you miss a class, you will lose all points for that class.

Since you may drop 2 quizzes and2 in-class participations, no makeups will be allowed!

You are required to participate in intense group work. You are responsible to your group.

Student Learning Objectives:

1.Analyze medical terms, give meanings and correctly pronounce words.
2. Define medical and human anatomical word roots, prefixes and suffixes, and be able to combine as well as solve medical word meanings.
3. Describe all of the major systems of the human body and their functions.
4. Identify the major diseases associated with each system

On day 1, I will explain and show you your website at:

I will then demonstrate your homework website: which you will have to sign up for. I will show you how to complete lessons and quizzes for your homework points.

I will handout week 1 in-class exercises which you will bring on week 2. Please do NOT fill these out as they are to be completed in class.

I will give a lecture and introduce vocabulary in Chapter 1 of Medical Terminology, A living Language, 5th ed. Fremgen, Frucht

WEEKS 2-14 First, I will ask for questions concerning the homework or lesson for that week.
