Neighborhood Partnership Program

Position Summary:

The Neighborhood Partnership Program (NPP) is looking for highly motivated people to serve as Program Assistants for the GEAR UP 4 LA program.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) 4 LA is a federally funded program that works with youth in the Belmont/Bernstein/Kennedy Zones of Choice to significantly increase student success in high school and persistence in college. The program also seeks to increase college and career awareness for students and parents. It provides knowledge of the admission process and the college experience. As a partner to GEAR UP 4 LA, Occidental College provides support for program goals by providing tutor-mentors for the cohort schools and hosting GU4LA students and families on campus several times a year. The goal is to improve college readiness and to give students positive role models.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the GEAR UP 4 LA Director and Program Coordinators, the Program Assistant helps coordinate the day-to-day operations of GEAR UP 4 LA cohort schools. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain records of participation and the results of that participation
  • Help collect data on students served by the grant
  • Enter and Organize data
  • Prep for meetings
  • Create promotional material
  • Clerical duties
  • Help with federal compliance
  • Organize and maintain program/project files and databases
  • Assist with writing, editing and designing applications, flyers and other promotional literature
  • Assist with other marketing and advertising efforts for program/project
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position must have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of experience and education and experience working with a team. The candidate must demonstrate competency in the following areas: public speaking and group facilitation skills; strong organizational skills; especially data management and monitoring heavy email activity; event planning and promotion; ability to encourage and empower others to lead and contribute to the program and working knowledge of excel necessary. Candidate must have a driver’s license and car. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 25-28 hours a week
