Our Mission:

Connecting community service volunteers with projects

Success of a community service experience is directly related to the support and value that is placed on this opportunity. By actively involving young people in the operation of community sites and organization we build very important relationships and a better understanding of how communities work. It is essential to remember that the people we work with today are the customers, library patrons, employees, and leaders of tomorrow.

2004 Revision

1.  FIND A SITE Ask your supervisor for a list of organizations who accept community service workers or visit the website for a current list of organizations. Opportunities for community service hours are available for those who need to perform such service for churches, community groups, schools, courts, and parole officers.

2.  DON’T WAIT Call or visit the site or organization as soon as you receive your community service assignment.

3.  LOOK SHARP Making a good impression is important. When you visit the service site dress appropriately for work.

4.  GET PERMISSION Volunteers who are under 18 years of age may be asked to have a parent or guardian sign a Volunteer Release of Liability. Some organizations require all volunteers or community service workers to have health insurance.

5.  PLAN AHEAD In order to complete your hours you should plan your time well in advance. Use a calendar to work out your hours with the person in charge at your community service location.

6.  BE FLEXIBLE Be prepared to work the hours that the work site offers. Realize that the tasks that you will be asked to perform may vary from day to day.

7.  TREAT IT LIKE A JOB Treat your volunteer assignment like a job. Be on time, and if you must be absent, call to let your supervisor know that you will not be available. Work out with your supervisor a time that is convenient for him/ her to make up your hours missed.

8.  LOOK TO THE FUTURE Look at the experience as a learning opportunity. This is your chance to gain valuable skills that may lead to employment. After your community service is over, if you would like to continue to volunteer talk to the supervisor.

9.  WHEN THE WORK’S DONE Only when your have completed your community service will the organization document your service hours. You may ask for a letter of recommendation from your site supervisor or ask if you may use them as a reference.
