NHS Required Hours of Community Service

Service Form

The FIRST CHART lists the required NHS Service Projects. You will need to participate in each one in some way. The SECOND CHART (on back) is to be completed by each member for SUMMER or SCHOOL-YEAR service hours.

©  NHS members are required to complete 20 hours of community service during the summer, then 20 more hours of community service during the school year.

©  You do have the option of completing all of your community service hours during the summer; however, realize that there will be several required services throughout the school year in which you will still need to participate.

©  Your volunteer activity must be supervised by an adult (not a parent), who must sign this form and provide contact information (phone or email). A letter validating your service can accompany this form but is not required (however, a letter may be good to have in your personal file for college application purposes).

©  There are a variety of ways to perform community service, and a myriad of organizations that will gladly accept your volunteer help. Below is a list of potential community service opportunities. If you discover an organization with a great need, please contact the sponsors. We may be able to gather many NHS members to assist the organization.

Things to remember:

1.  Always have this form with you when you do community service. If not, you will need a letter signed by your supervisor with all the above info. You can attach the letter, but still fill out the chart above.

2.  Indicate whether these hours go toward SUMMER or SCHOOL YEAR. You may complete all your hours over the summer if you like. If you don’t do any summer hours, you will be required to do all 40 hours over the school year.

3.  You are required to do 40 hours each year while in NHS. This means that most members will obtain about 80 hours of community service through their high school membership.

4.  Keep a copy of these hours and any letters that verify your service for yourself, as they will help with college applications and scholarships.

5.  Remember, all NHS required activities will count toward your SCHOOL YEAR hours.

6.  You are the one responsible for keeping track of all your hours, even the required ones. This sheet is our only way to ensure that you get credit for your work.
