A) INTRODUCTION:

Over the next semester, we will be examining a wide variety of English fiction and non-fiction. We will begin with an in-depth novel study focused on George Orwell’s Animal Farm. We will then complete a unit that focuses on questions and issues surrounding modern media, branding and advertising. The third unit of study will be based on Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. Our fourth unit consists of the study of several short stories that will be completed by way of literature circles in small groups of three to five members. Our fifth and final unit of study will be based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Please note that throughout the semester students will be required to reflect on their learning through the use of a learning log. Students will be submitting learning logs to the teacher at numerous times throughout the semester for review and assessment.

Learning outcomes for English 10:

Students will be expected to:

  • Articulate, advocate, and justify positions on an issue or text in a convincing manner, showing an understanding of a wide range of viewpoints.
  • Listen critically to analyse and evaluate concepts, ideas, and information.
  • Reflect critically on and evaluate their own and others’ uses of language in a range of contexts, recognizing elements of verbal and non-verbal messages that produce effective communication.
  • Articulate their own processes and strategies in exploring, interpreting, and reflecting on sophisticated text and tasks.
  • Critically evaluate and respond to the information they access.
  • Examine how texts work to reveal and produce ideologies, identities, and positions.
  • Examine how media texts construct notions of roles, behaviours, cultures, and realities.
  • Examine how textual features help a reader and viewer create meaning.
  • Use writing, oral presentation, as well as other ways of representing to explore, interpret, and reflect on their experiences with a range of text and issues.

  • WRITTEN TASK 5: COMPARATIVE COMMENTARY(VALUE: 10 %)

D) PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

I) ABSENCES: If a student is absent from class (excused or unexcused), he or she must see the teacher prior or immediately upon his or her return to class for any work, assignments, or information missed.

II) LATE WORK: All assignments are expected to be submitted on time. In some circumstances, an alternative due date may be assigned to an individual student at his or her request. This, however, will only be done in consultation with the teacher beforehand.

III) PLAGIARISM: All assignments are expected to be the student’s original work. Students are not permitted to submit work that is not their own.

IV) RESOURCE AND EXTRA HELP: I will be available for resource and/or extra help. Please see me either before or after class to schedule an appointment.
