This November, Troop 55 scouts will enjoy a day hike at Old Rag Mountain followed by overnight camping at the Rose River Farm. Old Ragis Shenandoah's most popular hike and includes a 9-mile circuit hike. A day on Old Rag is one of Shenandoah's premier experiences. The panoramic views are considered by many to the most spectacular of all of Shenandoah’s hikes, and the rock scramble is great fun.
Due to the limited number of daylight hours in mid-November it is important we leave St. Francis no later than 6:30 am so we can get to the trail on time and finish the hike during daylight hours.
The Scouts will need to have breakfast before they leave home in the morning and pack a lunch for the hike. Each Scout needs to bring two Nalgene water bottles for the trail and a trail lunch. Also, scouts should bring a daypack/backpack to carry their gear and food for the hike. As always in the fall, they need to be prepared for wet, cold, and windy weather on the trail and in camp. Raingear, non-cotton clothing layers, wind protection, hats, gloves, and hiking boots are required. Scouts will plan and prepare Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s breakfast in camp as a patrol. During these potentially cold trips, always err on the side of caution and PACK EXTRA CLOTHES & GEAR.
There is a $35 fee for each scout and parent attending (includes $10 transportation, meals & camping). THE TRANSPORTATION FEE IS WAIVED FOR BOTH SCOUT AND PARENT IF THE PARENT IS DRIVING.
Early payment price $26, if registration & payment are received by
Wednesday, November 6, 2013.
