MUS 141 Course study:

A study of the elements of jazz as well as tracing the development and evolution of styles and structure. Listening skills will be developed to recognize the many differences in individual solo as well as jazz ensemble interpretations. A discussion of composing and arranging music in a jazz style will be incorporated.

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss the development and evolution of jazz music
  2. Recognize and differentiate between the different style periods of jazz and musical interpretations
  3. Distinguish between the variety of cultural influences on jazz
  4. Analyze and describe individual contributions to the body of jazz material

Course Level Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will identify different elements of jazz styles and place the music within stylistic and cultural contexts.

Required Textbook:

Lawn, Richard J. Experiencing Jazz, 2nd Edition, Routledge, New York and London, 2013. ISBN: 978-0-415-65935-2, available online and in the LAVC Bookstore. In order to access the listening examples, you need the UNUSED ONLINE ACCESS CARD.

Rules:

  1. Bring your textbook to each class; it will be used heavily during the course
  2. You will be required to visit the online companion web site for listening assignments*
  3. No side conversations or unnecessary talking during class
  4. No unnecessary entrance and exiting of the classroom during class
  5. No cheating of any kind: You will receive a ZERO for the assignment/quiz/exam
  6. Failure to adhere to all the described policies may result in disenrollment; you may be dropped
