ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS Throughout our study of Global Studies, students will be required to complete different forms of assessment to illustrate their mastery of Global Studies benchmarks. These assessments will challenge the students to think critically to understand historical events from multiple perspectives. Such assessments include, but are not limited to:
Exams and Quizzes
Essay Writing
Document Analysis
Research Projects
Homework
GRADING POLICY
Exams, Quizzes, Essays, Projects
/60%
/Classwork, Homework and Participation / 40%
UNIT ASSESSMENTS: At the end of each unit of study, the students will be required to complete a unit assessment. If the student is absent for an assessment, he or she should expect to take a make-up assessment on the day of his or her return to class. Students will complete assessments that are modeled on the NYS Regents Exam in Global Studies (multiple choice and document-based questions, thematic and DBQ essays).
CLASSWORK: Students will be assigned classwork and short summary assessments daily. Unless otherwise instructed, classwork must be submitted at the end of the class period to receive credit. Missing classwork will be marked as such on Pupilpath and count as a zero. Students who are absent from school/class with a valid excuse (doctor’s note, in-school counseling/services, etc.) should retrieve any missing work as soon as they return to school//class. Assignments marked as ‘absent’ will be weighted as a zero until make-up assignments are submitted and graded. To receive a full credit: All parts of the assignment were accurately completed, with effort, thought and creativity, and both neatly and professionally.
HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will require that students remain up-to-date on current events. We will dedicate many lessons to discussing, analyzing, and debating current events. To receive a full credit: Work is complete, accurate, well-written, and legible. Work clearly restates the question within the answer. Written assignments include short response paragraphs and longer argumentative pieces. Written assignments are graded out of 5 and are weighted to mirror the scaled scores of the Regents exams.
Extra copies of assignments are kept in the back of the classroom. Students are fully responsible for retrieving them and making them up in a timely manner. All rubrics for HW and classwork are located in the front of the classroom.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES
Folder labeled “Global Studies - Sormani” just for this class. Notebook (preferably spiral) or binder filled with looseleaf (It is extremely important that students have a notebook/section of their binder SPECIFICALLY for this class, and each of their other classes. You must bring both of these daily. Pencils and Pens.
PUPIL PATH GRADES
I update Pupil Path with students’ grades and attendance daily. I also send reminder and announcement emails through this system, so please make sure that both parents and students have their email addresses linked to Pupil Path. If you have misplaced your login information, students should speak to Mr. Antunucci to reset their passwords.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Entrance Procedure: Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Students will enter the classroom through the back door ONLY, upon my prompting. Students will immediately sit in their assigned seat and take out their notebooks and anything that needs to be handed into me. Students should open their notebooks to the next available clean page and write the following information: the date, the full Lesson Aim, and the Initial Activity question. Students may then begin to develop a response to the Initial Activity question. THERE IS A DAILY DO NOW QUIZ and lateness will translate into a lower grade.
Bathroom Procedure: Students are permitted to use the bathroom during this class after the first ten minutes of the period and before the last ten minutes of the period. Students should raise their hand to ask to use the lavatory. When I grant permission, students will be required to sign out in the Sign Out Book and take the classroom pass with them.
Exit Procedure: At the end of the class period, students should pack their book-bags and exit through the front door ONLY. Before doing so, students should check that they submitted any necessary classwork.
