Helpful Hints for Assessors

About the Programme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme is a non-competitive, self-directed programme open to any young person aged 14 to 24. This is a programme designed to challenge young Canadians to become involved in worthwhile extracurricular activities. The Award is presented to young Canadians who have achieved a set standard in four Sections:

·  Volunteer/Community Service

·  Developing a Skill or Hobby

·  Physical Activity

·  Adventurous Journey/Camping Expeditions

Why You?

You have been chosen from this young person’s community because they are seeking your knowledge and expertise in a field they are interested in. This young person wants to (or already does) participate in a program/activity you are involved in and see you as a leader in this activity.

Your Role

As an Assessor, we ask that you monitor the young person’s participation and commitment to the chosen Skill, Physical Activity, Adventurous Journey, or Service. We recommend that you meet with the Participant on a regular basis to determine what progress has been made.

Complete and sign an Assessor Report, if you are satisfied that the Participant has:

·  Completed the minimum time period (ask the Participant about this)

·  Put genuine effort into the activity

·  Been challenged while participating in the chosen activity

·  Shown improvement appropriate for the individual and level

The record keeping is done by the Participant and should accurately reflect their participation. If for some reason you feel the Participant has not completed the section satisfactorily, please do not fill in or sign the Assessor Report. The Office may contact you if there are questions regarding the Participant’s activities.
