In this Digest, we will discuss topics of wide-ranging interest to those involved with magic, hypnosis and the paranormal and other subjects where the student needs a great deal of discernment to sort out illusion from reality.

For us, magic is a kind of metaphor for the problem of reality we have on Planet Earth. Illusion is not only widespread. It is a pandemic. It occurs on every level of life. Illusion crowds out a great deal of reality.
Contenders for political office deceive us with their false promises. Once in office, they deceive us by tailoring their actions to their receipt of political money from lobbyists instead of listening to the voice of the people who elected them. They create covert political, social and military programs without our knowledge and permission. They vote for bills with hidden clauses and commitments to spending tax dollars no knows about. When something terrible happens, whether they directly caused it or not, they protect us by creating cover-ups and proliferating untruths. They are magicians with words and Master Illusionists in their performances.
Yes, for us, magic is a metaphor. But, unlike other types of illusions, magic is actually, for the most part, a great deal of fun. Perhaps by putting magic on the table of our thoughts, we can learn to be more discerning about other things, some of them gravely important.
We hope you will enjoy a far-ranging discussion of this enigmatic place where paradox and uncertainty provide a subtle, gray fog to keep the gentle seeker on edge, uncertain of his footsteps. Readers may write us and contribute to this discussion. Where have you encountered unexplainable strangeness in your life? Where have you been able to penetrate the veil between illusion and reality? We cannot promise that we will print everything we receive, but at least let us look at it. Share your vision with us.
Magicians, most notably the contemporary Randi and the renowned Harry Houdini have been vitally concerned with helping the public to see the purported unreality of certain paranormal phenomena. David Blaine’s stunts taunt its public with a certain proximity to claims of paranormal powers, most specifically in his stunts that ape the powers of Hindu Fakirs. The program, the Phenomenon, with Uri Geller and Chris Angel, tackles “mentalist” illusions with the objective of rewarding the illusionist with global notoriety- but still much of the Phenomenon aims at spotlighting mentalist magic.
To be sure, there is sometimes a thin veil between what is real and what is pretense. Let us explore this strange place together.

The great illusionist Houdini was well known for his
staunch campaign against so-called mediums and psychics of the time. However, the motivation behind his fervent opposition was much deeper than a simple
business rivalry; Houdini had been attempting to make contact with his deceased mother through various mediums. Enduring failure after failure, Houdini began to doubt the validity of the psychics, and perceived their faulty attempts at communication as slights against his mother. Slowly, Houdini's disillusionment turned into the desire for payback; he decided he would expose these fraudulent mediums once and for all.

In one of his most famous attempts at exposing
mediums, Houdini participated on a board of critics for a study encouraging mediums to physically prove their abilities. A medium by the name Mina Crandon -
stage name Margery - stepped up to the task, confident that her abilities would prove that she could communicate with spirits. Ever the skeptic, Houdini confined Margery to a wooden box with a hole on
top (for her head) and holes on the sides (so her hands could be held during her séances). A bell had been placed in Margery's box, which she was instructed to ring after making contact with her spirit guide,
Walter (an unseen entity). Margery was unable to ring the bell, much to Houdini's delight. According to Margery, however, she had indeed made contact with her spirit guide Walter. Walter, in fact, declared that the bell was sabotaged; a piece of rubber had been wedged against the clapper so that it would not ring - this was indeed true, though it was never revealed who would do such a thing.
Later, Margery declared that Walter had discovered a ruler inside her box - a ruler that, as was later proven, Houdini had planted in order to discredit
Margery's claims of authentic communication with the spirit world.
The bitter battles continued and ultimately, Margery's abilities were never validated beyond a shadow of a doubt. On the other hand, Houdini's attempts to sabotage Margery nearly ruined Houdini's own
reputation. In the end, Houdini's seeming quest for justice was never completely realized, and the opposing circle of mediums never quite found a way to disprove Houdini's claims. Transcending Houdini's
period, the dispute between illusionists who claim their methods are rooted in physical principles and mediums who point to spiritual explanations seems a perpetually unresolved one.

Who is the Amazing Randi?!
James Randi - stage name "The Amazing Randi" remains a veritable force in the magic industry today. An ardent skeptic, Randi carries on Houdini's lifelong mission to expose fraudulent psychics whose claims of supernatural abilities are backed only by transparent parlor tricks.
As a child, Randi picked up magic after spending 13 months in a body cast due to a bicycling accident. His insight into the world of magic allowed him the ability to see through the deceptions of others'
illusions. While a deceiver on stage, Randi himself has admitted that he is a cheat and a charlatan - but it's all part of the game. What he shows no tolerance for, however, are those who claim to use physic
abilities as opposed to sleight of hand or carefully staged physical manipulation.

In fact, Randi receives massive publicity for offering a prize of one million dollars to anyone who can scientifically verify the presence of supernatural powers or events, on behalf of the James Randi
Educational Foundation. So far, no one has been able to stand up to the challenge. Randi has since appeared on television, directly challenging psychics such as James Hydrick and Sylvia Browne - both of whom have yet been unable to objectively verify their supernatural abilities.
Serving as probably Randi's greatest rival, paranormal magician and popular spoon-bender Uri Geller has filed numerous lawsuits against Randi, claiming that Randi's actions have unfairly undermined Uri's reputation. The lawsuits were dismissed as frivolous and ultimately,
Randi, as he puts it, "never paid even one dollar or even one cent" to anyone who sued him. As he continues to produce literature unveiling psychic secrets, Randi assures his readers that his opposition to fraudulent magicians is nothing more than compassion for those who are easily manipulated by deceivers.
History repeats itself in the eternal conflict between the psychic magician and the skeptic illusionist. Only this time, advances in science have caused the number of skeptics to multiply, and advances in technology allow these battles to be waged on the Internet, this time inviting spectators to choose sides with an unprecedented level of involvement.
Hey, remember that David Blaine trick where he levitates?
Do you? 's easy. Ridiculously easy. At least, that’s what we’ve been told.
Alright, first, go up to someone and tell them you can levitate. Now, turn around, walk about five feet back, turn about 20 degrees to the right, lift your right foot, and stand on the very tip of your toe with your left foot. Based on the angle, the person watching will see you "rise" into the air. That's it. Neat huh?

The belief in the ability of human beings to levitate is not new. Catholic saints like St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquainas, St. Joseph of Caportino are said to have levitated. In a five volume book about Christian saints, written in the mid 19th century, J.J. von Gorres speaks of 72 levitated saints, whereas Oliver Leroy, who writes in the 1920’s, estimated 200 out of 14,000 Catholic saints were have said to have levitated.
Shamans levitate. Yogis levitate. Witches are said to levitate. So no one culture or tradition seems to have a monopoly on levitation.
Alexandra David-Neel, the British explorer, gave an account of levitation in her book, With Mystics and Magicians in Tibet. The feat took place over the mountainous plateau of Cnang Tang. This is what she said, The man did not run. He seemed to lift himself from the ground, proceeding by leaps. It looked as if he had been endowed with the elasticity of a ball and rebounded each time his feet touched the ground. His steps had the regularity of a pendulum."
When I was a burgeoning young magician (who unfortunately never made it to the stages of Las Vegas), one of my most precious childhood tricks was the floating ball trick. Even as I performed it, using a primitive wire on my thumb to guide the ball, I became entranced by my own illusion.
The American stage magician, Harry Keller (1849-1922), was, in part, famous for his presentation of John Nevil Maskelyne's Levitation as well as other large scale tricks which were components of his large stage show, which toured throughout America during his career and made two famous World Tours. He was so respected by Houdini that the great magician arranged for Keller to be carried off in triumph for his final moment on stage while 6000 loving spectators sang, “Auld Lang Syne” in homage to the great magician.

Little tiny illusions can have big consequences for magical fun.
Have you ever seen someone melt a coin through a table? They slap their hand on the coin, rub it a bit, and bam! They lift their hand and it's not there. It's lying on the floor, under the table. How about that?
Well, once you learn this trick, you'll laugh. Ready?
While you rub your hand against the table, slowly move the coin along your palm down to your wrist. Then, plop. It falls off the table. That's all. I bet you feel foolish.
