JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Independent Living Support Assistant

Place:People with learning difficulties individual houses / flats

Responsible to:Independent Living Leader

Responsible for:Supporting people with learning difficulties to live independently

Special Conditions:These are to be 15hours per week minimum.This includes day and evening time and one sleepover per week. Flexibility essential.

You will be required to attend induction and ongoing training, and a monthly supervision meeting.CRB check required.

Main Purpose of Job:

To support people with learning difficulties living independently to live safely and well in their flats, and to help them to continue to increase their independence skills.

Main Duties and Tasks:

1. Depending on the support needs of each person,supporting people with learning difficulties with their leisure, social, practical and spiritual needs:

  • planning meals, shopping and cooking: supporting people to plan nutritionally balanced meals, draw up shopping lists to shop for these meals, and cook the meals.
  • budgeting: supporting people with learning difficulties to use their money appropriately, manage their bank accounts, and keep good financial records.
  • care of the flat: supporting people with learning difficulties to keep his/her flat clean and safe, whilst respecting his/her choices.
  • personal care: supporting people with learning difficulties with the care of their clothing, and prompting them around personal care issues if necessary.
  • planning and organization: supporting people with learning difficulties to plan his/her diary, travel, etc.
  • medical: supporting people with learning difficulties as necessary to care for their health, including exercise.
  • general: respond to any other support needs which may arise.

2. Skills teaching: Helping people with learning difficulties to develop new skills in all the areas listed above.

3. Ensuring Safety: being aware of the balance of risk and choice and ensuring that people with learning difficulties are not exposed to undue risk.

4. Team and Meetings: ensuring that appropriate communication occurs with the Independent Living Leader and other assistants. Attending monthly supervision, and any other meetings requested by the Community.

5. Administration: Keeping good written records, where appropriate in accordance to the National Minimum Standards for Domiciliary Care.

6. Liaison: being responsible for competent, clear communication with professionals, the people with learning difficulties family, friends and neighbours, visitors and other relevant members of L'Arche.

7. Statutory Regulations: to comply with all relevant Health and Safety and Fire Regulations, and L’Arche Lambeth policies.

8. Training: to attend initial induction, and ongoing training and formation courses as applicable to this Community role. This will include involvement in some L’Arche community activities.

9. General: to perform any other reasonable duties which are commensurate with the post and may be specified from time to time by the Community.
