JOB TITLE:Spiritual Care Chaplain

LOCATION:The Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice

HOURS OF WORK:22.5 hours per week

Role Profile:

The primary responsibility of the Spiritual Care Chaplain is to ensure that the spiritual and religious needs of all LOROS patients/clients, their family and carers as well as that of staff and volunteers within LOROS are supported.

1Responsibilities to Patients and Families

  • Discern, identify, assess and understand spiritual and religious history, resources and care needs.
  • Provide direct spiritual support and end of life counsel to patients and relatives in keeping within their spiritual beliefs.
  • Provide appropriate, culturally sensitive spiritual care.
  • Visit patients and relatives daily on the ward as required.
  • Ensure patients on the Day Therapy Unit are supported with pastoral/spiritual care.
  • Provide for appropriate religious care, to include the opportunity for a Service of public worship in the Hospice Chapel on a Sunday as required.
  • Meet the worshipping needs of patients in a flexible way, according to the condition of the patient. This will include administration of Holy Communion, Prayer, Bible Reading and Commendations. Much of this ministry may need to be done at the bedside for example communion and prayer for the dying.
  • Support the Lead Chaplain to arrange, attend and participate in special events within the Hospice including Services of Thanksgiving & Remembrance and Christmas events such as the In-house Carol Service and Light up a Life ceremony.
  • Help to facilitate weddings and other special occasions at the hospice as required.
  • Provide opportunities for patients and families own faith leaders to visit and provide support.

2.Responsibilities to Family and Carers

  • Provide spiritual care to the relatives of patients, including those who are bereaved.
  • Provide grief and bereavement care as appropriate. On occasion the Chaplaincy team may be asked to take a patient’s funeral; in this case home visits in order to plan the service and to support the family would be expected both before and after the event.

3.Responsibilities to the Organisation

  • Support organisational wellbeing including assisting in a weekly ‘Soul Space’ for staff and contributing to staff well-being days.
  • Provide pastoral support to staff and volunteers within the organisation and signpost to other sources of support if required.
  • Liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate, especially working alongside those caring for the patients and their families within the ward setting and day care.
  • Attend regular MDT meetings on the ward and in day therapy.
  • Work alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team to explore patient outcomes which demonstrate the value of specialist palliative care.
  • Provide spiritual insight in ethical decision making.
  • Provide education and induction of staff in respect of spiritual and religious care and engage in research and audit as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the Lead Chaplain maintain links with local faith groups.
  • Meet regularly with the LOROS Chaplaincy team and the wider Chaplaincy team for mutual support supervision and chaplaincy team development.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining resources in the Chapel/Prayer room and in Day Therapy that supports patients, relatives, staff and volunteers.
  • Participate in the LOROS Equality and Diversity group and work to ensure that LOROS services are accessible to all those requiring specialist palliative care, regardless of ethnicity, religious faith, sexual orientation or social grouping.

4.Personal Development

  • Commit to on-going personal and professional development
  • Participate in educational opportunities as they arise attending relevant conferences and study days.
  • Support personal development and reflection through participation in monthly supervision sessions.
  • Be a member of the UKBHC, (United Kingdom Board of Healthcare Chaplains) professional body.
  • Join the AHPCC (Association of Hospice and Palliative care chaplains) and attend their annual conference
