WYNN LAS VEGAS PROPERTY ARTWORK
ATTEMPTING TO CALM A TITAN
& MERCURY ASCENDING AZO Exciting, active, and masterfully painted with superb coloring and presence, Attempting to Calm a Titan and the companion piece, Mercury Ascending Azo, relate to the important developments of abstract expressionism that allowed America to capture the center of the international art world previously dominated by Paris. These pieces were created by a young, emerging artist, David Guidera and are located in the Wynn Convention Center corridor.
BRONZE STATUES Created by the late artist Stephan Weiss, the two bronze sculptures located at the Wynn Main Valet and South Valet welcome guests as they arrive at the resort. Weiss was the husband and business manager of fashion designer Donna Karan, but not many people knew he also was a distinguished artist and sculptor as well as creator of the iconic bottles for her scents. The horse and shoe sculptures evoke high fashion and sport, so it’s no coincidence that they are also conveniently located near the Wynn Esplanade, the resort’s luxury shopping venue and the resort’s race and sports lounge.
DIVA Miriam Schapiro's Diva pays homage to woman as the central focus in the proscenium frame of life's drama. She is accompanied by a musician and dancer, both males in supporting roles. Schapiro includes a collage of fabrics appropriate to the festival on the stage it celebrates. Diva and her companion canvases Master of Ceremonies and Dancing as Fast as I can, which portray African mask totems are located in the Wynn Convention Center corridor. Miriam Schapiro’s other canvases from this important series are in the private collection of Mrs. Elaine Wynn and currently grace the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
EIFFEL CHANDELIER This extraordinary chandelier was designed by famed Eiffel Tower designer and architect, Gustav Eiffel. Originally designed for an apartment building in 1918, Mr. Wynn bought the chandelier at an auction at Christie’s Paris and restored it before installing it at Wynn’s Terrace Point Café entrance. Crafted of wood, the chandelier is extremely fragile and includes the original Favrile Glass shades.
FULL FATHOM FIVE Full Fathom Five was created by Tim Bavington, the renowned British painter who lives and works in Las Vegas. Bavington primarily paints in a series of graphic stripes, with each stripe representing one musical note in a selected musical composition. Full Fathom Five is based on the song “Elephant Stone” by Stone Roses and is inspired by the Sylvia Plath poem of the same title. The piece is located adjacent to Terrace Pointe Café.
HEROIC SCALED GAUCHED
PAINTING This untitled heroic scaled gauche painting was purchased from the Paris flea market at Clignancort and was likely created in the early 1950s as a cartoon for the by famed Aubousson weavers of France. While the artist is unknown, it’s a triumph of composition and color. This dynamic and colorful composition portrays a festival in the country and illustrates traditional provincial costumers and country activities in modernist style and color. The painting is located in the Wynn Convention Center corridor.
METROPOLITAN TAPESTRY The Metropolitan Tapestry, located near the Lobby Bar & Café at Encore was created by Japanese artist, Kazumi Yoshida. The tapestry integrates the elegance and economy of Yoshida’s native aesthetic with the joie de vivre of the Parisian artistic tradition of the 20th century. Innovative, distinctive and exquisitely colored, his tapestries ricochet this royal eighteenth century treasure of craftsmanship into the twenty-first century.
RAOUL DUFY SILK TAPESTRY The untitled Raoul Dufy tapestry created in the 1940s and is located near The Country Club, is the largest Dufy painting in existence. Measuring 107 inches by 164 inches and is painted in translucent colors on untreated silk. Dufy was a renowned French post-impressionist known for his superb fluidity and masterful colorings. The piece reflects the post-war return to abundance and the good life. It is believed it was created for a palatial dining room.
SUNFLOWER FABRIC PANELS Located in the elevator alcove for the Wynn Resort Tower, the Sunflower Panels weren’t originally intended as artwork. They are remnants of fabric discovered in Venice, Italy by Roger Thomas our EVP of Wynn Interior Design. It was woven to demonstrate the height of accomplishment and complexity of the weaver’s art by famed textile house Rubelli. Its complexity made it far too costly for production so it stands as a superb example of the highest attainable in textile arts.
THREADERS-TOPAZ & LAPIZ Threaders, located near La Cave, was created by New York Artist Frank Owen. A personal favorite of Mr. Wynn, Owen works in the technically challenging and difficult medium of encaustic, i.e., oil pigments suspended in highly filtered beeswax. Encaustic gives a depth and luminosity to color which Frank Owens uses to full advantage, layering veils of brilliance in very active painterly strokes and gestures into a riotous active and energetic composition which visually defies the two dimensional canvas surface.
TULIPS Rendered in mirror-polished stainless steel and transparent color coating, the sculpture Tulips illuminates the Wynn Theater rotunda. Tulips was acquired at auction in November 2012. The legendary piece is the sculptural culmination of artist Jeff Koons’s Celebration series. Created in five unique versions, Tulips is one of the largest and most complex sculptures in the series. The sculpture represents a bouquet of twisted balloon flowers, which have been cast in stainless steel and brought to a high mirror polish and plated in a vivid spectrum of color.
VIOLA FREY SCULPTURE A favorite of Steve Wynn, American artist Viola Frey’s sculptures are reminiscent of works by Matisse, another favorite artist of Wynn. Frey’s detailed ceramic sculpture, located in Terrace Pointe Café, is lighthearted and colorful in theme and features intricate details based on mementos accumulated during one’s lifetime that make it a focal point and conversational centerpiece in the restaurant foyer.
