Water: a cross curriculum approach

CROSS - CURRICULUM LESSON ON THE SUBJECT

"THE WATER"

GRADE: 5th (11 years old)

COGNITIVE OBJECTS:

Language, Natural History, Mathematics, Computers, Art crafts, Music

TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

Make the students:

v  realise the importance of water in our life

v  know the multiple uses of water

v  locate the reasons and the consequences of pollution of water

v  practise in written and oral speech

v  express themselves through activities of aesthetic education

v  familiarize themselves with the search of information locating addresses in Internet

APPROXIMATE REQUIRED TIME:

The particular lesson is multidimensional and it could last through all the school year. The real duration of program depends on how the schoolteacher will handle this lesson but also on the behaviour of students.

STARTING LINE:

The chapter in the book of Physics, relevant to the water. Any other sources referring to intense meteorological phenomenon (e.g flood, the pollution of the see etc)

ESSENTIAL INSTRUCTIVE MATERIAL:

Encyclopaedias, photographs and videocassettes relative to the subject, articles from newspapers or magazines referring to water’s attributes, art craft materials (colours, dough, notepad of painting), cassettes or cd’s with songs about water (for the sea, the rivers etc), addresses in the Internet, geophysical maps of region and planet, photographic machine, transparencies

PREPARATION:

The students can be separated in teams and each will process a thematic unit (usefulness of water, pollution of water, cleaning of water, collection of songs, fables etc, the lack of water in other planets)

INDICATIVE ACTIVITIES:

ü  Collection of information on water from encyclopaedias, other forms (newspapers, periodically) but also from the Internet.

ü  Collection of photographs, pictures on the subject water.

ü  Student’s photographs focusing in water.

ü  Using all that material, students can make a collage and decorate the class

ü  The students may also prepare a questionnaire that concerns the pollution of water (see pollution of some aquatic resource of region …). The questionnaire can be filled by both students of big grades and by residents of region.

ü  Students may edit the answers of questionnaires and create a statistical representation in manuscript or in the computer

ü  Students may also present tables with the all reasons of pollution, with comparisons and statistical representations (graphics, pie-diagram), using the computer.

ü  Students can also visits (when it is feasible) rivers, lakes, hydroelectric dams, aqueduct.

ü  They can also take action and help cleaning a beach or a river side

ü  They can also help in sensitizing rest students of the school, by hanging their photographical material, statistical tables and their action on school’s walls.

ü  Collection of songs, films, poems, fables that are referred to the water can be reproduced by school choir, in a special fest about the value of water

EVALUATION:

The evaluation is advisable and adequate through all phases of the project. Questionnaires, oral discussion and other forms of evaluation can be used
