Job Title: PR & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER (Grade 6)

Department: Communications & Marketing

Reporting to: Associate Director of Communications & Marketing

Location: Head Office

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The PR and Communications Manager will take a lead role in planning, developing, delivering and evaluating pro-active media campaigns designed to raise awareness of Tenovus. In addition to this, the PR and Communications Manager will be responsible for building relationships with key media outlets, creating and implementing the media strategy for our corporate sponsors, dealing with media requests, sourcing case studies, organising media events, writing press strategies and taking an active role in new developments in charity communications across Wales and the UK.

The Job Holder will also be responsible for managing all internal and external communications and for the development of the charities website and social media plans.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational:

1.  To develop proactive media plans to support campaign activities, including identifying target audiences and key messages, developing story ideas and supporting research.

2.  To develop effective integrated internal and external communications systems.

3.  To write and dispatch news releases, source and support case studies, organise press events.

4.  To work closely with the Online Marketing Executive in the development of the charity’s website and social media strategies.

5.  To evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns, including preparing and dispatching questionnaires, commissioning media evaluation and market research and analysing.

6.  To provide training, support and press release templates for staff undertaking communications work.

7.  To develop and implement media plans for our main corporate sponsors, building relationships with them to ensure maximum benefit to both Tenovus and our sponsor.

8.  To work closely with other members of the charity, keeping abreast of useful developments, sharing useful contacts, communicating plans and ensuring that campaign activities are fully integrated within the charity’s other activities.

Campaigning:

9.  To devise, develop and cost plans for creative, effective campaigns and initiatives.

10.  To work with the Communications & Marketing team and SMT to assist in developing communications for key stakeholders.

11.  Promote Tenovus to all AMs and all political parties working closely with political agencies. Be an active member of Wales Cancer Alliance and implement actions when appropriate.

12.  Be the main point of contact for all policy/political enquiries and identify any potential political activity for Tenovusto engage in forthe benefit of patients and their families.

Media Relations:

13.  To brief media spokespeople providing effective information in advance of the interview to best promote the charity. To liaise with the press offices and PR/marketing agencies of partner organisations, securing in-kind support and ensuring the integration of media activities.

14.  To manage all media relationships. Respond efficiently to incoming enquiries and look to establish new media relationships to further raise the profile of Tenovus.

15.  To manage and maintain the media database ensuring it is continually reviewed and up to date.

16.  To provide a service to journalists and researchers and build a network of media contacts.

17.  To control budgets for relevant activities, including preparing budget costings and checking monthly management accounts.

Other:

18.  To act as a brand ambassador, writing copy for marketing purposes and ensuring all external copy is reflective of the Tenovus brand.

19.  To represent the charity at external meetings and events.

20.  To sign off all materials and act as point of contact, when appropriate, for the communications team in the absence of the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing.

21.  To maintain the highest levels of discretion with regards to sensitive or confidential matters encountered as part of the role.

22.  To ensure that Tenovus values and objectives are reflected in all aspects of the role and promote these when working with others.

23.  In addition to the above duties and responsibilities, the PR and Communications Manager must be prepared to undertake such additional duties which may result from changing circumstances, but which may not of necessity change the general character or level of responsibility to the post.

COMPETENCE

You are responsible for limiting your actions to those which you feel competent to undertake. If you have any doubts about your competence during the course of your duties you should immediately speak to your line manager.

RISK MANAGEMENT

It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff within the Charity fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All employees of the Charity have a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Employees are required to co-operate with management to enable the Charity to meet its own legal duties and to report any hazardous situations or defective equipment.

SMOKING

All employees, whilst in Tenovus’ employment, are required to adhere to the Charity’s no smoking policy. Any breach of this policy will be deemed as gross misconduct.
