Essential Question: What does a plant need to grow? / Homework: Take home observation book to orally discuss with parents the purpose of the book and what was covered during this lesson.

Lesson Sequence

Warm up: Teacher will read aloud the Big Book “Pumpkin Seed” Teacher will ask intriguing questions in regards to previous experiences.

Anticipatory Set:

(Building Background)

Students and teacher will take a nature walk and identify orally plants. Students and teacher will be making a list of things observed and predict what is necessary to make a plant grow. (Introduce vocabulary? Make labels?)

Lesson Focus:

(Teacher Modeling) Teacher will show a virtual tour of a plant growth. Teacher will ask probing questions about what they think their plant will do.

Guided Practice:

(Constantly checking for understanding)Teacher models how to plant a seed in a Ziploc bag. First, teacher wets a paper towel and places towel in the bag, then teacher will place seeds in bag and seal bag. Then bag is taped on classroom window. Students plant their seeds. Teacher demonstrates how to write entry in journal for first day of observation. (Review vocabulary? Students place vocabulary cards on a diagram or picture and discuss as they go??? Phone a friend or thumbs up thumbs down?)

Independent Practice:

(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice) Students will share what they have experienced during lesson using the Think-Pair-Share strategy. Then each student will write in their journals their experiences. (They may rely on peer for guidance.)

Review/Assessment: Review orally needs of plants; teacher will check journals for understanding
