Operating as a member of a provincial multi-disciplinary Occupational Health & Safety Team, your primary role is to lead all facets of investigations into fatal and serious workplace incidents. You will serve as the investigation specialist regarding procedural processes and provide direction to accompanying Occupational Health and Safety Officers in the collection of all forensic information and the completion of a detailed analysis of the incident. This analysis will include an in-depth review of site conditions, taking photographs, interviewing witnesses and employer representatives, developing diagrams, maps, sketches and measurements and the collection and cataloging of physical evidence and chemical samples. Using your knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety legislation you will determine when resumption of work can safely occur at the site. A key component of this role will be to review written reports, prosecution analysis and briefing notes for completeness and compliance with operational standards and to work with the investigations manager and the Crown prosecutor to determine if the evidence supports charges under the OHS Legislation and provide evidence in court or at a fatality inquiry. As time permits, you will also conduct work site inspections, investigate complaints at work sites, and provide technical assistance to other staff. Other duties as required by the OHS manager.
Your proven ability to work independently and in a team environment is essential. You will require a client service focus internally and externally, strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Mediation and facilitation skills would be an asset. A demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive, clear, and factual reports is essential. This role requires you to take part in internal and external training throughout the first year in order to meet the requirements of an Occupational Health and Safety Officer.

Salary: $3,336.13 - $3,838.68 Bi-weekly. Closing Date: January 26, 2014. Job ID: 1021479.
Qualifications: University degree in a related field plus four years of recent occupational health and safety inspection and investigation experience is required. Experience investigating fatal and serious workplace incidents is preferred. Equivalencies such as a related diploma and six years of experience with the above will be considered.
Final candidates may be asked to provide a Driver's Abstract and undergo a criminal records check. The successful candidate must successfully complete the Peace Officer training program and be able to be designated as a Peace Officer by the Solicitor General.
