Some Commonly Asked Questions about Playing a Band Instrument
Q: How do I know if my child should play a band instrument?
A: If they express an interest, I would strongly encourage you let them try. Playing an instrument is a skill which can be taught to anyone, regardless of their previous experience or background! Their success will be determined by the kind of support and encouragement we can give them - teachers AND parents.
Q: How will I be able to help my child when I have never played an instrument myself?
A: Many parents ask the same question! You can offer more help than anyone else through a word of encouragement, a ready ear, a proud smile, or just a reminder to practice. It is your genuine interest that will help your child realize success.
Q: Which instrument should my child play?
A: I will recommend an instrument based on your child's interest and physical characteristics. In MOST cases it will be the instrument they choose. In a few cases, though, I will suggest a different instrument than your child's first choice. It is our goal to place students on an instrument where they will have the most chance at succeeding!
Q: Where do I find an instrument?
A: John Keal Music services our district on a weekly basis and will supply instruments to you via a Rental Agreement. Payment options may be discussed with the respective music store representatives. They want to see your child with an instrument and will work with you to make this happen. A more detailed explanation will be offered at the Band Parents Night (June 13, 2012 at 7:00PM in the Elementary School Cafeteria). You will NOT have to travel anywhere; instruments and accessories are delivered directly to the school! You may also purchase an instrument elsewhere but PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE ANY INSTRUMENT WITHOUT ANOTHER MUSIC TEACHER CHECKING IT OVER FIRST. If you buy an instrument that is not properly functional, your child will be unable to succeed in playing the instrument and you will be stuck with an instrument that is not being played. Do not purchase an instrument from Wal-Mart or E-Bay. Though the price of these instruments may be tempting, the quality is far inferior to that of an instrument you could get from John Keal, Valley Music or Big Apple. One repair on the instrument can cost more than the instrument is worth itself and it WILL need to be repaired. If it is made in China, stay away.
Q: We have an old instrument at home. Can we use it?
A: Before using an older instrument, PLEASE LET ME INSPECT IT! There is nothing more frustrating to a child than trying to learn to play on an instrument that needs repair or that is not of a sufficient quality. Please let me check it first.
Our annual BAND PARENTS NIGHT will be held on Thursday evening, June 18, 2015 in the Elementary School Cafeteria at 7:00PM. I strongly encourage you and your child to attend this meeting with myself and our instrument dealer. You will be able to sign up to lease or rent instruments at this time, so you may want to bring a checkbook with you. If you are unable to attend but have some questions, please feel free to call me at: 839-6373or e-mail me at . I look forward to meeting all of you on the 17th and starting this experience together.
