SHAREPOINT Server 2010 ECM versus COMMON COMPETITORS – DISCUSSION GUIDE PAGE 1
Published: October 2009
Strength / Weakness / Microsoft Response
Microsoft / Breadth Platform. Large Partner Ecosystem. Driving ECM conversation. Provides broad easy to use and collaborative platform as well as compliance. / RM is new to SP 2010; BPM not included yet; nor imaging. WCM offering causing discussions. / Microsoft has continued to invest in ECM features, but is also leading the conversation by changing the way business thinks about ECM – not just content management but a unified platform that provides collaboration, social computing, search and more.
IBM / FileNet to work w/ all platforms; highlight acquisitions; BPM
25% Market Share. / License and Integration Costs are high; WCM, DAM and TCM. Portfolio Confusion: Collab Solution independent of ECM
Partner eco system is weakening. / Platform not really a platform yet – Cover most of ECM, but individual parts still require customer integration.
Oracle / ECM, WCM, Imaging and DAM offering. Can make ECM pervasive in all biz apps. / Cost; Getting a bad reputation with their partner community (as well as with customers). / Platform not really a platform yet – Cover most of ECM, but individual parts still require customer integration
Oracle squeezing partner share.
Autonomy / Leader in Search; WCM
Do what they do very well
Integrated with Autonomy Search and IDOL platform / New to ECM (acquired Interwoven). Cover only part of the ECM solution. Not really a platform for breadth (have IDOL, but not cost-effective for company-wide solutions) / MS is Cost effective, has breadth coverage and is platform solution; Can integrate with existing systems like Interwoven
Alfresco / “Open Source.” Near clone of SharePoint. / WCM; getting DoD certification; small, not really open source; somewhat unproven in enterprise deployment. Integration with SAP and Seibel is missing; partner eco system small. / The fact they attempt to copy SharePoint demonstrates the MS approach is a good one.
Open Source – even if not really – still a risk. No long-term strategy (or even assurance).
EMC / Archiving; DM; Email Archiving, Scanning + Storage. Full ECM lifecycle. Well-positioned for SaaS offerings. / BPM. WCM. Documentum app development is difficult
License and integration costs are high. / EMC is great for what it does, especially WCM, and for those that need it, Documentum + SP 2010 is a great solution – and one that both companies support.
Open Text / MS Competitor in WCM. Strong in oil, gas and financial services sectors. Leverage partnerships with MS and SAP. / Product Strategy is not clear. The portfolios full of different ECM products, which are not integrated yet. Smaller –remaining ECM pure play. / Open Text is great for what it does, especially WCM, and for those that need it Open Text + SP 2010 is a great solution – and one that both companies support. But head to head: MS is more cost effective
INTRODUCTION
Microsoft® SharePoint® Server 2010 advances Microsoft’s strategy as an ECM platform. Already positioned as a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant, Microsoft expects greater visibility as an ECM solution provider, as well as greater competition from a variety of organizations:
· IBM acquired FileNet and others, and provides a variety of ECM platform and point solutions
· Oracle acquired Stellent to boost its LOB solutions
· Alfresco a for-profit open source ECM provider
· Autonomy acquired Interwoven to augment it’s already-strong Search solution
· EMC acquired Documentum
· Open Text acquired Hummingbird and Vignette, both strong in the WCM space
WHAT ARE THEIR GO-TO-MARKET STRATEGIES?
· Microsoft: an ECM platform with broad-based core ECM functionality, as well partner extensibility for their offerings under the SharePoint umbrella
· IBM: a full set of ECM solutions integrated with WebSphere, DB2, Tivoli Storage Manager and Lotus products
· Oracle: a full “SharePoint Surround” ECM solution. Most obviously competitive
· Autonomy: extending offerings to include information management, not just Search
· Alfresco: Community development, as well as a SharePoint clone offering
· EMC and Open Text both partner on Documentum / Open Text + SharePoint deployments. However, they do compete with SharePoint, especially in Core ECM (Document Management), WCM and Archiving
SHAREPOINT ECM STRENGTHS
1. Integrated with Office System: via Client, Browser and Mobile
2. Delivers user participation
3. Compliance everywhere
4. Cost effective
5. Breadth/Platform solution: SharePoint ECM can effectively reach all users & types of documents & info. No other solution provides all the additional technology SP 2010 does: Collab, BI, Portal, Search, & Customization.
6. Integration with other solutions: SharePoint provides collaboration, business intelligence, search and other business-ready solutions; and SharePoint integrates easily with other Microsoft solutions.
COMPETITOR STRENGTHS & RESPONSES
· Integrated Solutions: Oracle and IBM especially have leveraged ECM as part of an overall solution, including collaboration, BI, database, etc. Both market this very strongly as a competitive advantage over SharePoint
-HOWEVER: Both IBM and Oracle are still dealing with issues integrating acquired solutions and solutions developed in separate departments.
-LEAD WITH: Easy integration; lower deployment and licensing costs; can integrate with existing systems (like FileNet)
· Deeper Coverage in Point Solutions: Open Text, ECM Documentum, and IBM FileNet are all perceived as “better” document, record and or Web content management solutions
-HOWEVER: SharePoint meets many needs in these areas; but if a deeper solution is required these products can be integrated into the SharePoint ECM implementation.
-LEAD WITH: Platform solution; Integrates with existing systems (like FileNet or Open Text)
· Open Source: Alfresco touts its open source community ties and full ECM solution.
-HOWEVER: Alfresco really isn’t. The supported Enterprise version includes proprietary software. Alfresco has many gaps that require third-party add-ons: IRM, Search, limited RM, WCM, and Archiving. Some functional aspects of its suite are new and unproven for enterprise deployment.
-LEAD WITH: True enterprise-ready platform for ECM (and collab, search etc. – none of which Alfresco does). Possibly focus on RM and WCM, which Alfresco is weak in.
· They’re Incumbent: Customers often balk at a new ECM solution if they already have a solution, such as Documentum, or Open Text.
-HOWEVER: These systems are often point solutions focusing on a specific content type and/or department.
-LEAD WITH: ECM Platform. With SharePoint as the front-end, existing solutions can be incorporated with SharePoint, creating additional value from the existing solution + new value with SharePoint collaboration and other benefits. Eventually the incumbent system will need to be replaced.
· They’re considered the leader: They lean on domain or industry experience to demonstrate their leadership (such as Documentum in Life Sciences, or IBM), showing a big install base with good partner ecosystem.
-HOWEVER: These are often examples of point solutions for a specific set of users, not a whole organization.
-LEAD WITH: Even if the customer is set on (or already has) one of these point solutions, SharePoint is still a great solution to extend the solution and/or provide new functionality to the whole organization.
