Ned Kelly was the most famous Australian bushranger of all time. The man, who stood tall in his armour, saved a boy and killed 3 policemen. But the unanswered question remains is, was Ned Kelly a hero or villain?
Early Life
Ned Kelly was born in June, 1854 in Beveridge, 45 kilometers north of Melbourne. Ned grew up in Beveridge and attended school at Avenel until his father died on 27th December 1866. At this point Ned was the eldest and had to be the man of the house and earn the money. At the age of fourteen Ned went to gaol twice but got released because of a lack of evidence. Then at the age of sixteen he went to gaol for riding a stolen horse.
Family
Ned was one of eight children and a son to Ellen Quin and John Kelly. Ned had two brothers Daniel and James and five sisters, Grace, Anne, Maryjan, Kate and Margret.
The Kelly Gang
Ned formed a gang with Joe Byrne, Steve Hart and Dan Kelly. The gang had many supporters but many did not like them.
Crimes
During Ned’s life he committed many crimes by himself and with his gang. He and his gang robbed Euroa National Bank and in February 1879 the gang robbed the Jerilderie bank. He also killed three police in the Stringy Bark Creek incident.
Euroa National Bank
On the 10th of December, 1878 The Kelly Gang set a plan to rob the Euroa National Bank. The gang barged into the bank and held people hostage, while they robbed the bank. They stole over 2000 pounds.
Stringy Bark Creek
On the 25th of October 1878, the police received a notification that the Kelly gang were in the Wombat Rangers. The police found the gang at Stringy Bart Creek. Ned then shot three police dead.
The Green Sash
At the age of 10 Ned Kelly was walking to school, then at the corner of his eye he saw a fellow class mate fall in to the river while trying to fetch his hate. Ned than jumped in to the river and saved the boy. In his reward he got a green sash that he wore under his armour in the last stand.
Death
In 1880 Ned was put on trial and then found guilty and put to gaol. Ned got hanged and it was believed that Ned’s last words were, “Such as life”
