Procedures and Criteria for Nominations
Each Council may nominate a Reader of the Year in this category:
PRIMARY (PreK-2)
Please submit information (with nominee's name on both essay and letter) in the order listed below:
1. ESSAY or INTERVIEW
· “What Reading Means to Me” or “My Reading Autobiography”
· Written by nominee OR dictated to teacher by nominee
· NOT poem or rap song
· One-half (minimum) to two (maximum) pages – TYPED
· MUST include variety (genre) and quality of reading done
· MUST include estimated amount of time spent per week reading (outside of school)
· Judged on effectiveness of language, attitude conveyed toward the topic, creativity, grammar, and information included on variety, quality, and time
2. TEACHER LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
· One-half (minimum) to two (maximum) pages – TYPED
· MUST include description of nominee's achievement in reading (test scores may be used, but are not required; however, if test scores are used, permission from the parent must be included with nomination documentation)
· MUST include description of nominee's oral proficiency (oral interpretation, presentation, plays, etc.)
· NOT scrapbooks, newspaper articles, reading journals, or book lists
· Judged on teacher's interpretation of nominee's attitude toward reading and information included on reading achievement and oral proficiency
