APPROVAL OF ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PAUL MAYNARD MEMORIAL SWIMMING SCHOLARSHIP
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Many times in the past, organizations and individuals have made contributions to the Niagara Falls City School District.
The family of the late Paul Maynard, teacher and coach in the District for 32 years, wishes to donate $8,000 to establish the Paul Maynard Memorial Swimming Scholarship in honor of his involvement as an educator and swim coach at both LSHS and the present NFHS, and for his support to the swimmers and athletes in the Niagara Frontier league. His passion for the sport and his efforts to encourage swimming, athletics and academics on all levels personified him as a friend and role model to many.
The funds will be used for an annual scholarship, commencing at the end of the 2001-02 school year, to be given to a graduating senior. The individual shall be chosen by the Maynard Family with the aid of the Pupil Services Department and the NFHS swimming staff.
Each candidate must be a graduating senior, must have been a member of their high school Swim Team for at least three years ending with their senior year, must have been accepted at an accredited two or four year college/university, must be ranked in the upper 2/3 of their senior class, and must offer a letter of reference from at least one teacher attesting to his/her academic ability.
The amount of the annual scholarship will be no less than $1,000 and will continue until all funds are exhausted. If no swimmer qualifies in any given year, the scholarship will be held and extended for an additional year, or may be awarded at eh discretion of the Maynard family.
This action item was prepared and reviewed by Mr. James Ingrasci, Director of Financial Services. The proposed resolution was reviewed by Mr. Angelo Massaro, School District Attorney.

RECOMMENDATION:
A motion is recommended for the approval of the establishment of the Paul Maynard Memorial Swimming Scholarship
WHEREAS, it has been a practice for organizations and individuals to make contributions to the Niagara Falls Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, the family of the late Paul Maynard has donated $8,000 to establish the Paul Maynard Memorial Swimming Scholarship in his honor; and
WHEREAS, funds from donations will be used for an annual scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a graduating senior who meets the criteria as set forth in the Scholarship Application; and
WHEREAS, the individual shall be chosen by the Maynard family with the aid of the Pupil Services Department and the NFHS swimming staff; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Niagara Falls Board of Education gratefully accept the gift of $8,000 to be used to establish the Paul Maynard Memorial Swimming Scholarship; and
RESOLVED, That the School District Treasurer be directed to establish an account entitled “The Paul Maynard Memorial Swimming Scholarship Fund”
