Using Desktop SPSS 21 for CHI-SQUARE
HOW TO DO CHI-SQUARE USING SPSS
Univariate:
1. You can start by opening the data file you wish to use OR opening SPSS and then locating that file.
2. If you have an open SPSS file you will see rows of data and columns with each variable. This may be labeled the SPSS Data Editor. You will need to have this window open to perform any statistical tests.
3. Pull down "Analyze à Nonparametric Tests à One Sample
4. A dialogue box will open. You will see several tabs including Objectives, Fields, and Settings. Under Objectives, you can choose “Automatically compare observed data to hypothesized” or choose the Settings tab. Under “Choose Tests” you will have several options. Select “Compare observed probabilities to hypothesized” for a univariate test.
5. Under the Fields tab, select the variable(s) you wish to test. Select one of the variables from the box by clicking on it. (You can use the scroll bar to move up and down in the box.)
6. If you choose to customize your analysis, you can do so through “Settings” tab.
7. Click “Run”
8. If you need to, go back and repeat any necessary steps. If
You like what you see, SAVE your work.
9. If you are done with your analysis, quit SPSS. Pull down "File à Exit."
Bivariate:
1. You can start by opening the data file you wish to use OR opening SPSS and
then locating that file.
2. If you have an open SPSS file you will see rows of data and columns with
each variable. This may be labeled the SPSS Data Editor. You will need to
have this window open to perform any statistical tests.
3. 3a. You can get to a bivariate chi-square test in several ways. First, you can follow the directions above but on step #3, instead of selecting “One Sample” select “independent samples.” Again, you can choose to let SPSS pick the test for you or fine-tune the analysis.
3b. Another, perhaps simpler way to conduct a bi-variate chi-square is to pull down "Analyze à Descriptive Statistics à CrossTabs
4. A dialogue box will open. You will see a box in the upper left that contains
all of the variables in the dataset. There are also two empty boxes on the right. These boxes are separated by an arrow.
5. Select one of the variables from the left box by clicking on it. (You can use the
scroll bar to move up and down in the box.)
If it is your independent variable, move it to the box marked “columns.”
If it is your dependent variable, move it to the box marked “rows.”
You can also layer your analysis using a third variable.
6. Now click on the box marked “statistics.” Select chi-square. If you want the
analysis to display cell percentages or expected frequencies, you can select these options under the “cells” option.
7. Click “OK”
8. You can go back and repeat any necessary steps. If you are happy with your results, SAVE your work.
9. If you are done with your analyses, quit SPSS. Pull down "File à Exit."
