1. CALL TO ORDER (6:38 pm by Chair Spears)
Roll was taken by Secretary Michael Smith.
Present: Mr. Netza Romero, Mr. Dajhaye Spears, Mr. Omar Kayed, Ms. Valerie Dohrer, Mr. Evan Hynes, Ms. Izzy Mayer, Ms. Megan Winkelman, Mr. Jake Winkelman and Mr. Julian Morris-Walker
Absent: Mr. Paul Lazarus, and Mr. Noah Klein-Markman
Staff present: Secretary Michael Smith
2. ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. YU-CAN meeting Bay Area Network event please see package please call Sharon Smith
at 415-788-3666 ext 144.
B. Youth Arts Fair is looking for a commission member to be the Master Ceremony.
C. On May 19th Commission Spears, and or Hynes will receive the proclamation of Youth Art Fair Day at City Council meeting.
D. Teen Water Rafting trip May 23rd
· Signups $15 per person
· Departing from YAP at 7:30am and returning back to YAP 6:30pm
Summer registration for all City of Berkeley Summer Programs, registration for
Community Builders program, and Community Achievers has begun please see
Coordinator Mike Smith from the Young Adult Project.

5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes from April 13, 2009 with corrections.

6. Chairperson’s comments
Chairperson Spears commented on the resignation of Megan Winkelman stating that Commissioner Winkelman has served the Youth Commission well and that she will be missed.
8. DISCUSSION ITEMS.
a. Tim Burroughs City of Berkeley Planning Department- reported on the current state of the COB Climate Action Plan and urged the commission to get involved and spread the word in the community.
b. Nate Dahl- Berkeley YMCA Youth and Government Efforts to recruit youth from South and West Berkeley. YMCA wants to encourage participation in the Youth in Government program, Asked if the Youth commission would get the word out to youth to sign up for this program.
c. Ofelia Vega: Teen program updated the Commission on upcoming events with the Teen Program including the White Water Rafting trip on May 23, 2009.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Special Event Art Fair- Commissioner Morris-Walker presented a report on the status of the art fair. Commissioner Morris announced that the next committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 4:00pm and encouraged all commissioners to attend.
YMCA Teen Center – No Report
Young Adult Project- Commissioner Spears commented on the Positive Parenting Classes at YAP which continues through May 12, 2009. He also encouraged sign-ups for all YAP summer programs.
Recreation Teen Program- Commissioner Romero and Spears reported on the City Teen Program and upcoming events as well as encouraging teen participation.
Aquatics Master Plan- Commissioner Mayer updated on the status of the Master Plan and urged commissioners to support efforts of the task force.
Education/ Youth Workforce- Commissioners M. Winkelman, and Morris-Walker thanked the Youth Commission for supporting the proposed resolution regarding the Berkeley High Re-Design Plan.
Environmental Stewardship/ Health and Human Needs- No Report
Youth Voice and Empowerment- No committee member(s)
