“Just Right” Temperature-Controlled Mug

The temperature-controlled mug that keeps your beverages and liquids “just right”!

Idea

A potential product is a temperature-controlled mug that allows the user to choose a set temperature to maintain for the contents inside the mug. The mug will be powered by a rechargeable battery for multiple uses. The mug powers on via a power button on the side. Current temperature inside the mug is measured using a thermal resistor and is shown via an LCD display. The temperature can be adjusted using “-“or “+” buttons. The mug will be heated or cooled according to the temperature set by the user using a built-in insulator and heater.

As a commercial product, this product will attract consumers who prefer keeping their beverages and liquids at the temperature that is “just right.” Consumers can keep their coffee hot when on the go or can maintain the hotness of soup during a cold sick day. It can also be used to prevent ice cream from melting when outdoors or for keeping protein shakes cold for those at the gym. Whichever the use, the temperature-controlled mug is a perfect product for consumers of all ages. If very successful, the product can be expanded to larger containers similar to Tupperware and can be used for keeping lunches and meals hot or cold, which is especially useful when at the office or on outdoor trips such as camping.

Stakeholders and Requirements

  • User
  • The product should be easy to use, portable, and lightweight.
  • The product should have a slick and ergonomic design that is comfortable when held in hand and aesthetically pleasing.
  • The product should have a long lasting battery life on every charge.
  • The product should be easy to clean and store.
  • Designer
  • The concepts and requirements behind the product design must be possible to meet.
  • The product should be designed with detail, uniqueness, and proper functionality with easy troubleshooting.
  • The product must be economically feasible.
  • Client/Manufacturer
  • The product should have low production and manufacturing costs.
  • The product must be profitablewith high value.
  • The product should be safe and meet all safety concerns.

Initial Evaluation

The temperature controlled mug is a good, potential project for a two-semester, multi-student senior design project. The materials required are readily available and cost-effective.A group of mechanical and computer/electrical engineers would be most ideal due to the knowledge and skills needed in materials science, thermodynamics, electronics, and programming.Research and design should be the primary focus in the first semester andthe final product prototype should be built and completed during the second semester.
