USED BY GOD

SCENE 1: Inside the house

(LEIGHA is jumping rope. LILLY is keeping time with the teddy bears rhyme. A blue chair is next to a wall.)

The puppet curtains are closed, and a background picture of a burning house is on the wall behind the curtains.)

LILLY: (when the rhyme is finished) Okay. Now it’s my turn.

(LILLY takes the rope from her sister and tries to jump, but messes up)

LEIGHA: (teasing) You can’t do it! You can’t do it! You’re too little to jump rope.

(LEIGHA takes the jump rope and exits)

LILLY: (Frustrated and sad, she throws a tiny fit) I’m too little to do anything! I even need to stand on a chair just to look out the window (She gets a blue chair, stands on it, and opens the curtains to look out the window). What’s going on over there? It looks

like Mrs. Barokie’s house is on fire! Well, I may be little, but I’m going to try to do something.

(LILLY closes the curtains all the way, and then exits. SAM takes down the burning house picture and opens the curtains)

SCENE 2: At Mrs. Barokie’s house

(ABRAHAM enters through the hallway door as the fireman.)

ABRAHAM: Hello! Is anybody in there?

SAM: Yes. I’m stuck inside, and I have a baby. Can you help me?

ABRAHAM: I’ll rescue you, ma’am. I’ll go get my fire hose and be right back (ABRAHAM exits through the hallway door).

(LILLY enters through the hallway door)

SAM: But what about my baby? My baby needs to be rescued right now!

LILLY: I’ll rescue your baby, Mrs. Barokie.

SAM: You? But you’re too little to rescue my baby!

LILLY: But sometimes I play baseball and I’m real good at catching the ball. I’m sure I could catch your baby, Mrs. Barokie.

SAM: Well, okay (SAM carefully drops the baby down to LILLY, who catches her).

LILLY: See? Your baby is safe! (LILLY starts rocking the baby and singing a little song to her)

(ABRAHAM enters through the hallway door, with his fire hose)

ABRAHAM: All right, ma’am. I’m here with my fire hose (He holds the hose up and pretends to extinguish the fire).

(SAM enters)

SAM: You’re my hero!

ABRAHAM: (proud) It wasn’t any trouble, ma’am. I rescue people all the time.

SAM: Not you. I was talking to that sweet little girl. Thank you so much for rescuing my baby! I will never forget that.

LILLY: I guess you’re never too little to be used by God.
