Notes provided by Edwin K. Smock (August 2002)

Ref: My visit (August 8, 2002) to Fells Cemetery, (Est. 1785) Fellsburg, PA. (Records prior to 1900 were destroyed in a fire.)

Abraham7 and his wife Isabelle (Shepler) Smock are buried in Fells Cemetery, Fellsburg, PA.

Their headstones read:

Abraham7 Smock

Died June 8, 1831 (June 8, the 8 is hard to read however, it is a single digit.)

Aged 44 yrs, xxx mths (could not read the months)

Isabelle Smock wife of Abraham7 Smock (on Abraham’s right)

Died June 8, 1834 (stone is broken, yrs and mths are unreadable)

To the immediate left of Abraham7 is the grave of Jacob Shepler “ Who departed this life May 16th A.D. 1833 in the 45th year of his age”.

To Jacob’s left (plus one empty space), is the grave of:

Philip Shepler “Died May 22, 1829 aged 88 yrs. There is an American flag with a Revolutionary War bronze emblem/holder attached near/to Philip’s headstone

The grave of Elizabeth (Shepler) Smock reads: “Elizabeth” wife of Henry Smock died Sept 27, 1882 aged 93 yrs. (Her birth would equate to 1789.) There are two headstones to Elizabeth’s immediate left however, they are unreadable. The closest one may read Davis R. (I could not be sure but that is my best guess.).

There are numerous Shepler graves within a 20 yd circle of Abraham’s grave. Many are not readable. I will list what I could make out.

One row of consecutive graves, I will number 1 thru 9: (This row is in front of Abraham’s grave, facing his.)

  1. Charlie D. Shepler died Feb 15, 1877
  2. Willie M. Shepler aged 12 yrs xxx mths, died Jan 7(7?), 1877 (can’t read mths)
  3. Eddie G. 9yrs 10 mths, died Jan 19, 1877 and Nannie A. (double stone, twins?) 9 yrs 10 mths, died Jan 20, 1877
  4. Ednxxx wife of Philip died May 15, 1886 (6?)
  5. Sarah wife of Philip died April 12, 1870, aged 30 yrs 10mths & 5 days
  6. ???? Can not read
  7. ???? Can not read Nattie xxx of Shepler
  8. Samuel Shepler died Nov 23, 1875 in his 80 year
  9. Mary wife of Samuel Shepler 88 yrs died May 13, 1884

Another row of consecutive graves, I will number 10 thru 17: (This row is behind Abraham’s grave and facing his.)

  1. In memory of Margret xx Shepler (damaged “old” stone)
  2. Jane (ne?) wife of Isaac Shepler b. Dec 7 (7?) 1720, died xxxx (not sure about the 1720 as it was hard to read).
  3. In memory of Isaac Shepler who departed this life Dec 10th 1837, aged 54 years 8 months & 18 days.
  4. Mary E. (E?) Daughter of xxx Shepler died Mar 27 1811 aged 8 years (small stone) (can’t read mths & days.
  5. Elizabeth wife of Davis Shepler died March 11, 1819 In her 39 year
  6. Erected in the memory of Samuel Reeves who died Feb 15th 1839 in the 66th year of his age
  7. Erected in the memory of Sarah Reeves consort of Sam’l Reeves who died June 10th 1810 aged 29 years
  8. Davis Shepler died April 3, 1883 in his 66 year

Behind this row are more Shepler graves:

  1. A multiple sided (4) vertical grave marker with the following names: Isaac H. son of Lxxx Shepler d. May 2, 1876. Hannah H. Daughter of Lxxx Shepler d. June 10, 1870. Herman W. son of xx & M.E. Shepler d. Jan 21, 1870. The forth side is unreadable.

In a newer section of the cemetery I found (together):

  1. Louisa J. Shepler 1841-1911
  2. And a double grave marker Shepler M/G-M Irene June 6, 1918- Feb 5, 1994 and Mother of Nicole-Jordan, Joni Rae July 28, 1962-June 23, 1994

This was as far as I searched. There most likely are many more Shepler graves in the Fells Cemetery.

I found the following Shepler graves near the Smock Family Lot in Belle Vernon (within 20 ft. of Abraham and Marion) (in a row)

  1. Elmer E. son of P & C Shepler died Feb 22, 1887
  2. Catharine Shepler 1829-1909
  3. Philip Shepler 1859-1909 (Yes, Catharine 1829 and Philip 1859 are correct. (The headstone is easy to read.)

Notes for MARGARET HOUSEMAN:

The following is an authors note about Mathias Shepler and Margaret Houseman which comes from the book, " The Houseman Family " author Harry Houseman Frazier, Tiffin, Ohio: 1937

The reader is doubtless curious about the name Margaret Houseman, who married Mathias Shepler.

The author has been even more curious, but is unable to place her with certainty. It would seem that

she was the daughter of John Houseman, a sister of the first Christopher, but for one fact; viz: the

supposed year of her birth was 1754 and this would make her twenty-two years younger than her

brother. While this is not impossible, it is somewhat improbable, Deeds, wills and other public records

of Westmoreland and Fayette Counties do not indicate there was any other family of Housemans in

western Pennsylvania before the Revolution. If we were to prove that the first John Houseman had

children.

(note by Gene Smock) The author also states the Houseman family settled in Westmoreland County
