Course Description

The second of two required English courses at Valencia College, ENC 1102 builds upon and refines the skills acquired in ENC 1101. Those skills would be logical thinking, thoughtful reading and effective writing. Students will also learn to analyze works of literature and develop writing skills learned in Composition One. Composition 2 is a literature-based course. Students will focus primarily on contemporary writings. Students will be expected to read and come to class prepared to discuss what was read.

The course reading materials are divided into two sections.

The first section is a Drama section. We will begin the semester with reading, analyzing and discussing a number of plays. You will also work on a play project which will be due at the end of the semester.

The second section focuses on reading assignments that have been labeled as Multicultural Literature. This is literature that represents varying ethnic groups, women, immigrants, individuals with disabilities, the vulnerable, and the marginalized people of our society. Topics such as racism, stereotyping, prejudice, diversity and other multicultural issues will be discussed in class.

Core Competencies

Think, Communicate, Value and Act are Valencia’s core competencies. See the college catalog for a more detailed explanation of the competencies.

Required Texts and Readings

Kirszner and Mandell. Portable Literature. 9th edition

Bullock and Weinberg. The Little Seagull Handbook (for MLA purposes) (Optional)

(This is the grammar and writing handbook that was used in Comp I. It is not mandatory for this class but it will be incredibly helpful when reviewing how to write your research papers and MLA.

You must get at least a C in this course to pass.

If an assignment is not handed in on its due date or not completed, it will receive 0 points.

Documented Papers

You will be assigned 2 documented essays. This paper will be focused on the material you have been assigned to read for class. You will be given the topics. You will be asked to write on some aspect of the piece of literature that is being discussed in class. Your paper will require research. It will account for a major portion of your grade. You are expected to follow the proper guidelines (MLA format) and use audience appropriate language. A rubric will be given to further explain how your paper will be graded.

Exams

There will be two exams during the course of the semester. Information about the exams will be provided. For these exams, you will be allowed to use your text and notes.

Quizzes

After every reading assignment, there will a short quiz in the beginning of class. Questions will focus on your reading assignments.

Group Project

During the course of the semester, you will work in a group of 4-6 students to write an original play. You will begin the project in the beginning of the semester and present your play at the end of the semester. In addition to the written portion of your project, you will present your play to your classmates. More information will be given about this during the course of the semester.

Attendance/ Lateness

You are expected to be in class. After two absences, you will be given an “excessive absence” notification. This notification will be via email. Refusal to address this notification can result in your withdrawal from the course (see withdrawal policy section). You should give the instructor either a verbal or written notification of your absences. After three absences you willbe withdrawn from class.

If you will be late for class or if you have to leave class early, send a notification to the professor.

Being late to class and leaving early is disruptive. Every effort should be made to arrive on time to class and leave only when the instructor has dismissed class.

Participation

Your participation in this course is based on two things. First, you need to attend. Second, because this is a literature-based class, you are expected to come to class ready to discuss whatever you have read. As you are reading, make notes and try to prepare thoughtful commentaries that you can share with your classmates and instructor.

Deadlines

All assignments are due on the specified date and time; they will be submitted on Blackboard on the Assignment submission page. Assignments that are printed and brought to class, sent via Blackboard email or Atlas email will not be accepted. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Withdrawal Policy

A student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadlinewill receive a grade of “W.” A faculty member is permitted to withdraw a student from the faculty member's class up to the beginning of the final exam period, for violation of the faculty member's attendance policy, as published in the faculty member's syllabus. A student is not permitted to withdraw from this class after the withdrawal deadline; if you remain in the class after the withdrawal deadline, you can only receive a grade of A, B, C, D, F or I. An I grade will only be assigned under extraordinary circumstances that occur near the end of the semester. If you receive an I, the work missed must be made up during the following semester, at which time you will get an A, B,C,D or F. Failure to make up the work during the following semester will result in you getting a grade of F in the course. Any student who withdraws from this class during a third or subsequent attempt in this course will be assigned a grade of F.

The withdrawal deadline forSPRING FULL TERM 2018FOR A W GRADE IS MARCH 30t. Please see your course outline for other important dates.

Missed Exam

If you miss an end of unit exam, you will have a maximum of five days to make-up that exam. After five days, the exam cannot be made up. You will need to discuss with your professor an appropriate time and date for the make-up. The exam can be sent to the testing center.

Blackboard

Even though this is a face-to-face class, Blackboard will be used. Our class is considered web enhanced. Important materials for the course will be posted on Blackboard. They are rarely given out in class. You are encouraged to use your Blackboard email to contact your professor. Directions on how to use Blackboard is at the end of this syllabus. These directions will also be discussed in class.

Communication with your Professor

Our class email on Blackboard is best. If there is a need to see your professor on a one to one basis, (this is encouraged) visit during office hours or make an appointment. Proper communication between the professor and the student makes for an easier class.

Plagiarism
