Course Description/Objectives ( pre-requisite – math 1): Math II continues students’ study of algebraic concepts including functions, polynomials and rational expressions, as well as congruency, constructions, triangles, and one unit of probability. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graph, algebraic numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Emphasis will be placed on practical application. Appropriate technology, will be used for instruction and assessment.
Communication:Accurate information about what is going on in school does not always make it from students to parents. The following can help ensure you are aware of what is going on in class and your child’s progress.

1. Powerschool: Parents and students can get a log in to access information on this website where they can access real time attendance and grade information. If you need your login information, please contact the school.

2. Phone/E-mail: My email address is at the top of the page, please feel free to contact me. If I have your email address, I will do my best to keep you informed.

3. Class website: The web address for the class website is at the top of this page. This site will have resources to help your child be successful. Students will be able to find assignments, and supplemental information about various topics that students, parents and/or tutors may find helpful.

4. Conferences: I recommend that if you are going take the time from your busy schedule to schedule and attend a parent/teacher conference that you meet with all of your child’s teachers at the same time. Call student services or email your child’s counselor and they will be happy to set this up for you.

Unless otherwise requested by the parent through e-mail, the first formal indication of your child’s grade will be a mid-quarter progress-report. Please use Power School to monitor your child’s grades on a daily basis.

Materials Needed for Class

1. binder to hold and organize assignments/handouts. There is no physical textbook for Math 2, so you will be receiving a lot of copies and handouts

2. loose leaf notebook paper or other notebook paper
3. No. 2 sharpened pencils or pens
4. TI 83/84 graphing calculator (recommended, not required). I have a class set of graphing and a set of scientific, but students greatly benefit from having a graphing calculator to use at home. Also, a scientific calculator (usually $10 or less) is an affordable alternative and will allow your child to do MOST of their work at home. is a great free supplementary resource that will help your child with the graphing portion of your homework. Also, Android has a free app, Wabbitemu, that is a graphing calculator. It is free to use and available for any Android device.
Textbook: There is no textbook for Math 2 at this time. I will pull materials from multiple sources. However, students will be given electronic access to the old Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II textbooks as the Math II curriculum pulls from these three textbooks in addition to other sources.

After school tutoring will be available for students who are making a concerted effort. Concerted effort means that the student’s work reflects thoughtful effort towards ALL items on classwork, homework and assessments. Students must inform the teacher 24 hours in advance that they plan to attend a tutoring session. Students who are not making a concerted effort in class need to first take care of using class time wisely before being allowed to attend tutoring sessions.

Late Work: Per CMS policy, students will receive a maximum of 65% on any late work showing concerted effort, if turned in at the beginning of class one day after the original due date. After this, late work showing a concerted effort will receive a 50% if turned in prior to the first day of the midterms (1st and 3rd quarters) or the final exams (2nd and 4th quarters). Work is considered late if it is not handed in when asked for. If you turn it in at the end of the period, it is late.

Make up Work : When a student is absent from class, arrangements for all make-up work, including homework, quizzes and review quizzes/tests must be made within five days of returning. Arrangements need to be made by the student with the teacher to complete missed assignments. I will not chase you down to make arrangements. If a student is only absent the day we review for a test, he or she will be expected to take the test with the class upon returning. Final responsibility for making up class work and test lies with the student, not the teacher. I will update the gradebook regularly so you know what assignments you are currently missing, if any. If a student is absent on the day of a test, he or she must make arrangements to make up the test after school with the teacher.

Grade Calculations:Here is the grade breakdown for this class per CMS policy:

1st9 weeks: 60% formal, 20% informal, 20% midterm = 50% of your semester grade

2nd 9 weeks: 70% formal, 30% informal = 50% of your semester grade

Final exam: NC Final Exam = 0% of your semester grade (field test this year)

Informal assignmentsare assignments, linked to specific course objectives, that may include but are not limited to warm-ups, notebook checks, group work, in-class tasks, class participation, classwork, homework, etc. Informal assessments count 20% of the 1st quarter grade and 30% of the 2nd quarter grade. Formal assignmentsare assessments, linked to specific course objectives, that include tests, quizzes, and projects. They count for 60% of 1st quarter and 70% of 2nd quarter grades.

Remediation and Reassessment : Every student at Hopewell High School will be given an opportunity to master course objectives through a variety of strategies provided during class and outside of class. Student’s formal grades will be broken down by objectives. After each formal test or quiz, every student will be given the opportunity to improve their mastery of specific concepts and then demonstrate this improvement to improve their grade.” Students who score a79% or below can retest after completing remediation (tutoring, extra practice outside of class, etc). Upon retest, students will receive the higher of two grades for a maximum of 79%. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete the remediation and retest process within two weeks after the original test date (unless other arrangements are made with the teacher). Tests will be graded and posted by objective, and students are encouraged to retest (after completing remediation) on any objective for which they scored below a 79%.No retests will be given for a student who scored an 80% or higher on the original objective. Students will normally have 2-3 weeks to complete a retest. If a student does not complete his or her retest during that time, that student will not be allowed to retest at the end of the quarter.
Grading Scale- based on the following North Carolina grading scale:
90-100 A 80-90 B 70-80 C 60-70 D 0 - 59 F
Attendance Policy; It is expected that students arrive to class before the tardy bell. Students who arrive late must get a tardy pass from Room 226. Students who miss more than 10 class periods in a semester must make arrangements with the teacher to recover this missed class time. Students who do not do make up missed time, over 10 class periods, will receive a grade of “F” according to N.C. law. Students who are absent half the period or longer are counted absent.
Leaving Class and Dismissal : Students should not ask to leave the room for any reason other than a restroom break or an emergency. Per school policy, no one is to leave class the first or last 15 minutes of class.

Honor Code (PBIS): Each student must acknowledge their understanding of the Honor Code by signing an

acknowledgment form. The form can be located in the PBIS Manual. Plagiarism, in any form, will not be tolerated. If any part of a student’s work can be found in anyother printed form, whether it be published or on the Internet, it will result in an automatic zero onthe assignment and referral to an administrator. Cheating is defined as students using someone else’s work to complete his/her own.
