DearColleagues,

We are writing to remind you of the procedure for issuing course warnings to students.Students should be placed on "warning" if they are currently earning a grade of "D" or "F," or if it is suspected that a student’s continued performance may result in a final grade of "D" or "F." The course instructorsends an email with an attached Course Warning Form directly to the student, with a copy to the student’s commons dean. Please clearly label the subject in the email "Course Warning."You will find the student’s commons affiliation in column M of your Banner Web downloadable course roster or in the directory under the student's name; the student’s extension and box number are also on the downloadable course roster listed in the final two columns.

Many students who receive course warnings dramatically improve their performance in the class in which they have received the course warning. After you send a warning to a student, with a copy to the student’s commons dean, in most cases, the commons dean 1) discusses the matter with the student, 2) informs Learning Resources, 3) provides the student information about available resources, and 4) invites the student in for further follow-up.For students who receive more than one warning in two or more subjects, the dean also notifies the parents or guardians. An official course warning and a meeting with a dean have proven to be successful combinations in helping students improve their performance.

On the attached Course Warning Form please include reasons the warning was issued. These are some of the reasons that are frequently listed as areas of concern:

poor attendance

low grade on assignments

low grade on exam/midterm

missing assignments

does not participate in discussion

hands in work late

Many thanks in advance for your efforts to give students feedback on their academic status.

Sincerely,

Bob Cluss

RESOURCES FOR THE STUDENT

There are many resources for students to use when meeting academic challenges. Please consult with your course instructor to discuss problems and possible solutions. Additionally, you should contact your academic adviser to discuss managing the overall workload and a general academic plan.

Your Commons Dean will receive a copy of this warning notice and at his or her discretion will call you in to discuss your course progress.

*If you are receiving a second warning for the term or are on academic probation from the previous term, your Commons Dean will notify your parents.
