A Visit to the London Transport Museum
Our next meeting will be held on Friday 22nd March2013commencing with a private tour of the London Transport Museumin Covent Garden Piazza, London, WC2E 7BB,at 6.15pm. The museum is within easy walking distance of Covent Garden Underground station and is also conveniently placed for Charing Cross main line and Underground stations. It is usually possible to find a parking space in the vicinity at this time in the evening – although you may have to pay the congestion charge. Numbers are strictly limited on a first come first served basis to 50, as we will split into 3 parties for a private tour of the Museum led by our President, Guy Marriott, and other members of the LT Museum Friends. The exhibits include a Metropolitan Railway steam locomotive and carriage, perhaps the Inner Circle train from The Bruce-Partington Plans……. Other exhibits include horse buses and trams (not that we have any record of Holmes and Watson using these forms of transport) and a 1922 Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive, identical to the one which once carried the name “Sherlock Holmes.” There are no horse cabs on display, but our President’s 1936 Austin taxi, on loan to the Museum, is displayed.
The London Transport Museum Shop will be open before our visit commences at 6.15pm, but will be closed when our visit ends. It a very good shop for books about London in general, and its transport in particular, so you may wish to arrive early to allow time for browsing and purchasing in the Museum Shop.
At 8.00pm we leave the Museum for a pub buffet meal at The Marquess of Anglesey, 39 Bow Street, London, WC2E 7AU ( talk on some of the history of Covent Garden byWestminster Blue Badge Guide Fiona Lukas. The Marquess of Anglesey is a traditional pub in the heart of Covent Garden, directly opposite the Royal Opera House. Covent Garden belonged to Westminster Abbey until the Reformation when it was granted to the Earls of Bedford who built houses there from the 1630s onwards. Several taverns were established at this time and the area’s reputation reputedly prompted Hogarth to use it for the third scene of the Rake's Progress depicting his downfall. The growth of the fruit and vegetable market, with shops being built in the 1670s, made the area less attractive and premises became coffee houses, lodging houses and brothels. The Hummums were Turkish Baths which also sold alcohol and served as brothels. They appear in Great Expectations and the site is now partly covered by the London Transport Museum. Coffee Houses which later became pubs were also established, including, in Bow Street, the Brown Bear, Will's (re-named the Bunch of Grapes) and Mile's (re-named the Marquess of Anglesey). It will be possible to book the pub buffet meal and talk if you are unable to make the Museum visit beforehand.
Members and their guests may opt to attend
The 6.15pm museum tour, buffet meal and talk at £28 per head.
The 8.00 pm buffet meal and talk only at £18 per head.
This includes VAT and service but not drinks, which must be paid for on the day. Fish and vegetarian options will be available.
Applications should be sent to arrive not later than Saturday16th March.
Dress is smart casual.
Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members. They should also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent. We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.
