If you need money for college and/or want to earn a merit scholarship, you should apply for financial aid and scholarships through the Winston-Salem Foundation. Check out local scholarship opportunities at www.wsfoundation.org. The Winston-Salem Foundation common scholarship application is currently available with a deadline of April 15, 2011. Some scholarship opportunities coordinated by the foundation require a separate application process. The deadline to apply for need-based financial aid is August 15, 2011. NAACP SCHOLARSHIPS/CHUCK LEWIS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High School senior with 2.5 GPA or higher, plan to enroll full-time in a two or four year accredited college or university, demonstrate financial need, and be a youth member of the W-S Branch of the NAACP (membership application may be submitted with scholarship application)

Awards: Several $1,000 scholarships

SARAH MARSH SCHOLARSHIP/NAACP

Criteria: High School senior planning to enroll as a full-time student at a historically black institution; must be a youth member of the W-S Branch of the NAACP (membership application may be submitted with the scholarship application)

Award: One $1,000 scholarship

DIGNITY AWARD (PARKWAY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST)

Criteria: WS/FCS high school student who best demonstrates a personal commitment to creating a safe school environment for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered or perceived as such; student must be nominated by a faculty member and write an essay about supporting equality of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identify

Award: $200 scholarship

Deadline: April 30, 2011

FORSYTH ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Forsyth County seniors who have demonstrated scholarship, leadership, initiative, and involvement in school and community activities; minimum 2.8 GPA, good character and respected by fellow students and faculty; financial need may be considered (three MT seniors may submit application)

Awards: $750 scholarships

Deadline: April 26, 2011-Interested seniors should provide Senior Profile/Resume and Scholarship Nomination Form by April 11, 2011 to Mr. Huck

ETHAN DEREK SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor senior with a GPA from 2.5-3.5 and demonstrates financial need (but not restricted to very low income), plan to attend college, community college, or technical school; preference given to students planning to study architecture

Award: One $750 scholarship

SCOTTCARES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: High school seniors who plan to continue an education in the arts, including visual arts, music, drama, speech, literary arts, dance/movement, photography, and technology-generated arts; 2.5 minimum GPA; interviews will be conducted on May 4, 2011

Awards: Several scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,500

Deadline: April 21, 2011 (Return completed application to Mr. Huck)

MALCOLM/HUNNICUTT/CARTWRIGHT ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: This scholarship, in memory of three gentleman who served the WS/FC schools as teachers, coaches, and administrators, will recognize a graduating senior of a WS/FC high school who has shown significant achievement in sports and one or more of the following areas: academics, leadership, character, and community service (one MT senior will be nominated and complete the application process)

Award: $1,000 non-renewable scholarship

Deadline: April 29, 2011 (Interested seniors should turn in Senior Profile/Resume, Scholarship Nomination Form, and a written statement about her/his significant sports achievements/contributions during high school-signed by at least one coach-to Mr. Huck by April 11, 2011)

WILL TO WIN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: High school seniors who are outstanding, disciplined, determined and successful in managing their asthma; hold a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

Awards: Ten $5,000 scholarships in the following categories: performing arts, visual arts, community service, athletics, and science

WS/FC ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED SCHOOL PERSONNEL SCHOLARSHIPS (C. DOUGLAS CARTER SCHOLARSHIP)

Criteria: Outstanding seniors who plan to pursue a career in Education (applications from two MT seniors will be accepted)

Awards: Two $1,000 scholarships

Deadline: May 2, 2011 (interested seniors should have Senior Profile/Resume on file and submit Scholarship Nomination Form to Mr. Huck by April 8, 2011)

FORSYTH TECH SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Seniors who have applied for admission to FTCC by April 15th and receive a FTCC student ID (follow the direction page carefully and file the FAFSA by May 1, 2011)

SENAH C. AND C. A. KENT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school seniors who demonstrate traits of high personal character, leadership and ambition; academic merit and financial need

HIGH SCHOOL INNOVATOR OF THEYAR SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school students who have invented something noteworthy or improved a process that affects their fellow students, city, or town during their high school careers

Criteria: Seniors dedicated to volunteering, dedicating their time to working for the greater good, selfless service that has made a big impact in their community or beyond

Criteria: MT seniors who are PTSA members and minimum QPA of 4.5 and GPA of 3.5

Awards: Two $1,000 scholarships (one female and one male)

Criteria: MT seniors who are PTSA members and participate in music, drama, art, or dance at junior and/or senior level with a minimum GPA of 3.0; eligible students must have served in a leadership position in performing or visual arts

MOUNT TABOR PTSA ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: MT seniors who are PTSA members and have or will participate in a varsity level sport during the senior year with a minimum QPA of 3.0

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE SCHOLARSHIP (STATE EMPLOYEES CREDIT UNION)

Criteria: Eligible students are seniors at North Carolina traditional public high schools who have been accepted to one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina; student has demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement; student must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and deserving of financial aid

Award: One $10,000 scholarship (over 4 years)

Deadline: May 4, 2011 (Mount Tabor application will include Senior Profile and Resume, Letter of Acceptance to a UNC school, and statement of character, integrity, community involvement, and financial need, and statement of parent/guardian employment to Mr. Huck by April 18, 2011)

IDA TILSON SCHOLARSHIPS (FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ON FIFTH in WINSTON-SALEM)

Criteria: Although the primary criteria is need, evidence of ability to succeed in the educational program chosen, character and dependability, and religious involvement will be considered

2011 STUDENT-VIEW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Complete a 15-20 minute application survey about colleges in your area-random drawing

Awards: One $4,000 scholarship, two $1,00 scholarships, and eight $500 scholarships

WHITLOW-OSBORNE SCHOLARSHIP (NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF RESCUE & EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES, INC)

Criteria: High School Seniors or members of an Emergency Services in several counties, including Forsyth, who will enter into an Emergency Services Curriculum for a course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school; based on scholastic achievement, intellectual ability, activities, financial need, character, and promise of future contribution to our State and Nation

Award: One $2,000 scholarship ($500 per semester for 2 years)

BOB R. MCGUIRE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (NATIONAL CHILD SUPPORT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP)

Criteria: Senior with overall C average or higher with at least one parent who is a member of the North Carolina Child Support Council or a client of the Child Support Program (either through Child Support services of Clerk of Court services)

Award: $1,000 scholarship

NATIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SCHOLARSHIPS @ JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Seniors who are members of any (8 total) National Student Organization (including DECA, FBLA, and FCCLA)

STATE EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION OF NORTH CAROLINA SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Criteria: Seniors whose parents/guardians are members of SEANC, planning to attend four-year or two-year colleges (separate scholarships based on academic performance and financial need AND academic performance without regard for financial need)

Awards: Twenty-eight scholarships (1r merit-based and 14 financial need) for 4-year colleges; Six scholarships (3 merit-based and 3 financial need) for community colleges

ERICA WOLFE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor senior who has participated in band/orchestra or high school sports, school clubs, and community organizations; minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA

Award: one scholarship, varies each year (usually $750 to $1,000)

WES BURTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor senior who has demonstrated examples of community and school service, plans to major in mathematics, computer science, business administration, or engineering in college, and demonstrates financial need

Award: $500

JOSH GRAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are members of the girls or boys soccer teams and demonstrate strong character and leadership skills, extraordinary team spirit, concern for others, a positive and encouraging attitude toward teammates, and a genuine lover for soccer; academic promise and financial need also considered

Award: $1,000

EDWARD KENT WELCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Mount Tabor seniors who are accepted to and plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and demonstrate academic promise, evidence of strong moral character, genuine concern for others, and school and/or community leadership

Award: $1,500

Deadline: all seniors who plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill are considered in May

KUANDELEA ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM OF WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Academically talented, highly motivated graduating seniors from any public or private school in Winston-Salem/Forsyth county who intends to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time at WSSU (one award titled the Elsie Marshall Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to major in a teacher education program); minimum GPA of 3.25 and 950 SAT/19 ACT

PROSEPECTIVE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP-LOAN PROGRAM

Criteria: Merit-based program available to students with a non-weighted 2.5 or better APA who have chosen to pursue teaching as a career

Awards: $2,500 per year for first two years and $4,000 per year for junior and senior years (recipient agrees to work full-time as a teacher in North Carolina’s public schools one year for every year of funding received

MILLENIUM TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP-LOAN PROGRAM

Criteria: Merit-based scholarship-loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession; recipients agree to work full-time as Registered Nurses in North Carolina
