Come to the ARES Picnic
Saturday, July 13 at Odlin Park on Lopez Island
Sam, AC7HR has invited us to hold our July meeting on Lopez. Pack your picnic and take the interisland ferry arriving at Lopez at 10:05. Proceed down the road to Odlin Park. Turn right
about one mile from the ferry.
ORDER OUT OF CHAOS
Saturday, June 15 on San Juan, saw ten of us at the American Legion Hall picnicing in the sunshine. They were: Frank, KD7IRE; Lizzie, N7NCS; Charlie, W7BXH & Nancy, KD7IRD; Babs, KD7CIN & Peter, K2SPR; Charlie II, W7HND; Dick, W6OPX and Sue; John, KC7WJJ and guests Sheriff Bill Cumming and Carl & Loretta Poschman. Sheriff Cumming introduced Carl, who has a wide background in police and emergency operations management and training. He and his wife have recently retired to Buck Mountain on Orcas Island. He’ll be the new Emergency Services Manager. Julie Knight, on Lopez, will continue as coordinator. Max Jones, Orcas Fire Department, Dave Zeretzke and Robb Dickerson, KD7ITV, fill out the Sheriff’s emergency management team. We’ll be ready when needed. The Sheriff enthusiastically supports the inclusion of radio amateurs as a meaningful component of San Juan County’s developing emergency management network. He will be funding the radio equipment which Charlie, W7BXH and friends will be setting up at the new Mullis Center for emergency communications.
The congenial group enjoyed a sunny lunch and also a productive business meeting. Our wonderful non-organization is about to become official. We welcome Dick Rich, W6OPX as President of the San Juan County ARES Group. Dave, K9MRQ will continue as Treasurer. Jim, KB7RSX will handle the incorporation procedures. Babs, KD7CIN will keep on doing the Dummy Load. Peter, K2SPR handed over the group archives to Dave. Bud, W7COW has offered to give them a home.
Peter, K2SPR and Keith, N7SLN will go up the mountain to tune the repeater. Editor’s note: They tuned the two meter duplexer, cleaned connections and removed some elbows on July 3.
County Fair Thursday, August 15 - Saturday, August 17
Dave, K9MRO has ARRL Literature to hand out at ARES table, part of Model Railroad Club’s fair exhibit. We’ll be discussing this at the Picnic. Come sign up for a few hours to blow the ARES horn. Dave is trying for the biggest ham class ever this coming Fall. He also says that we might have the display case at the San Juan Island Library for August. Come with ideas for a Ham presentation.
Welcome Lizzie Evans, N7NCS
Recently relocated to San Juan, Lizzie found our group in May. She and her husband (now a silent key) retired from OR in 1997 to Scott Bar CA, in the Marblemount Wilderness where they succeeded in carving out a homestead. She stayed there for a year after he died before moving to 230 B street #202, Friday Harbor WA 98250, 370-5060.
