Products Furnished But Not Installed Under This Section:

Furnish to Masonry Contractor, sheet metal flashings and counterflashings to be built into masonry wall construction.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Performance Requirements:

General: Sheet metal flashing and trim assemblies shall withstand wind loads, structural movement, thermally induced movement, and exposure to weather without failure due to defective manufacture, fabrication, installation, or other defects in construction. Completed sheet metal flashing and trim shall not rattle, leak, or loosen, and shall remain watertight.

Sheet Metal Standard For Flashing and Trim: In accordance with NRCA’s “The NRCA Roofing Manual” and SMACNA’s “Architectural Sheet Metal Manual” requirements unless more stringent requirements are indicated.

Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes to prevent buckling, opening of joints, overstressing of components, failure of joint sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects.

SUBMITTALS

General Requirements: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 013300.

Product Data: Submit for each type of product to include material descriptions and finishes for each manufactured product and accessory.

Shop Drawings: Provide Shop Drawings of sheet metal details as follows:

Include plans, elevations, sections, and attachment details.

Detail fabrication and installation layouts, expansion joint locations, and keyed details. Distinguish between shop and field assembled work.

Include identification of material, thickness, weight, and finish for each item and location in Project.

Include details for forming, including profiles, shapes, seams, and dimensions.

Include details for joining, supporting, and securing, including layout and spacing of fasteners, cleats, clips, and other attachments. Include pattern of seams.

Include details of termination points and assemblies.

Include details of expansion joints and expansion joint covers, including showing direction of expansion and contraction from fixed points.

Include details of roof penetration flashing.

Include details of edge conditions and counterflashings as applicable.

Include details of special conditions.

Include details of connections to adjoining work.

Provide samples of selected prefinished coating colors for prefinished galvanized sheet metal on not less than 8inch by 8inch metal panels, for approval.

Provide samples of sheet metal section shapes for Architect’s approval, if requested.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Coordination: Coordinate sheet metal installation with adjoining carpentry work, mechanical equipment installations, roof penetrations, and affected wall construction.

PreInstallation Meeting: Coordinate and conduct a PreInstallation Meeting prior to proceeding with sheet metal fabrications and installation.

Review construction schedule.

Review special roof details, roof drainage, roof penetration flashing, equipment curbs, and condition of other construction that affect sheet metal flashing and trim.

Review sheet metal flashing observation and repair procedures after flashing installation.

Review sheet metal warranty.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Handling of Materials:

Handle sheet metal carefully and treat with respect for its quality and importance of good appearance.

Blemishes and damage due to careless handling will be cause for rejection.

SITE CONDITIONS

Protection:

Protection of Existing Building During Roofing Operations:

Take measures necessary to protect existing building from damage due to exposure to external environmental conditions when removing existing roofing components and sheetmetal work from existing roof assemblies affected by the Work.

Schedule roofing work only when reported environmental conditions are favorable for ensuring security of existing building during roofing operations.

Unfinished roofing work not totally completed at completion of each day’s work to be left in such a manner to ensure protection of existing building from damage.

Damage to existing building, resulting from Contractor not taking necessary precautions to ensure protection of existing building, to be repaired or replaced at Contractor’s expense and to Owner’s satisfaction.

Protection Against Traffic Damage: Take special precautions against traffic damage to roofing when ambient temperature is above 80degreesF. Avoid heavy traffic on installed roofing work during installation.

Restoration of Damaged Work: Restore to original condition or replace work or materials damaged during handling of bitumens and roofing materials.

Protection of Building and Site: Protect paving and building walls adjacent to ladders, hoist, and kettles prior to starting work.

Lap suitable protective materials at least 6inches.

Vent polyethylene, if used, to keep moisture from condensing and collecting on covered surfaces.

Secure protective covering against wind.

Leave protective covering in place until roofing work is completed.

WARRANTY

Roofing and Flashing Warranty: Sheetmetal work shall be of materials, fabricated and installed in a manner to provide total roofing system warranty specified in Section 075100.

Finish Warranty For Prefinished Galvanized Steel Sheet Metal: Provide a 20year written warranty covering color fade, chalk, and film integrity of the prefinished galvanized steel sheet metal to include, but not limited to, the following:

Color fading more than 5Hunter units when tested in accordance with ASTM D2244.

Chalking in excess of a No.8 rating when tested in accordance with ASTM D4214.

Cracking, checking, peeling, or failure of paint to adhere to bare metal.

Sheet Metal Contractor’s Installation Warranty: Prior to acceptance of the Work, furnish a written 5year warranty.

Description:

Base Metal Material: 24 gauge (0.0217inch) thick, G90 hotdip zinccoated (galvanized) structural quality steel sheet metal in accordance with ASTM A653, primed.

Provide 20 gauge thick material where indicated.

Surface Texture: Smooth.

Exposed Surface Finish: High performance organic finish.

Prepare, pretreat, and apply coating on metal surfaces to accordance with coating and resin manufacturer’s written instructions.

Fluoropolymer 2-Coat System: Manufacturer’s standard 2coat thermocured system consisting of specially formulated inhibitive primer and fluoropolymer color topcoat containing not less than 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride resin by weight; in accordance with physical properties and coating performance requirements of AAMA 2605; factory applied over pretreated base metal by the coil-coating process in accordance with ASTM A755.

Protective Film: Provide strippable film on top side of coated sheet metal to protect finish during fabrication, shipping, and field handling. Strippable film will be removed just before installation of sheet metal.

Exposed Surface Color: Architect will select from manufacturer’s standard colors.

Galvanized Steel Sheet Metal:

Metal Material: G90 hotdip zinc-coated (galvanized) commercial quality steel sheet metal complying with ASTM A653, mill phosphatized for painting.

Gauges: Provide not less than the following gauge of metal as applicable to each item of the work:

Flashing Reglets/Inserts: 24 gauge (0.0239inch thick).

Cap Flashing: 24 gauge (0.0239inch thick).

Umbrella Hood and Sleeve at Steel Pipes and Conduits Penetrating Roofing Membrane: 26 gauge (0.0179inch thick).

Hook Strip: 22 gauge (0.0299inch thick).

Aluminum Sheet Metal:

Aluminum Sheet: ASTM B209 (ASTM B209M), alloy as standard with manufacturer for finish required, with temper as required to suit forming operations and performance required.

Finish: Clear anodized, coil coated, AAMA 611, AAM12C22A41, Class1, 0.018mm or thicker.

Gauges: Provide the following gauge as applicable to the work:

Flashing and Counter Flashing: 20 gauge (0.0320inch thick).

Flashing Reglets/Inserts: 20 gauge (0.0320inch thick).

Fascia: 16 gauge (0.0508inch thick).

Cap Flashing: 16 gauge (0.0508inch thick).

Coping: 16 gauge (0.0508inch thick).

Downspouts and Scuppers: 14 gauge (0.0641inch thick).

Counterflashing at Skylight Base Support Curb and Rooftop Mounted Mechanical Units Made of Aluminum: 20 gauge (0.0320inch thick).

Umbrella Hood and Sleeve at Aluminum Pipes and Conduits Penetrating Roofing Membrane: 16 gauge (0.0508inch thick).

Sheet Metal For Miscellaneous Items:

Sheet Metal For Hook Strips: Use continuous strips of galvanized steel sheet metal regardless of sheet metal type being hooked over it.

Sheet Metal For Rooftop Mounted Mechanical Equipment Curbs: Counterflash curbs for mechanical equipment, which has builtin or separate aluminum overlapping flashing furnished by equipment supplier, with aluminum sheet metal.

FASTENERS

General:

Provide types of fasteners and other miscellaneous items as required for complete sheet metal flashing and trim installation and as recommended by manufacturer of primary sheet metal unless otherwise indicated.

Provide wood screws, annular threaded nails, selftapping screws, selflocking rivets and bolts, and other suitable fasteners designed to withstand design loads and recommended by manufacturer of primary sheet metal.

Fasteners: Provide blind fasteners or selfdrilling screws, gasketed, with hexwasher head.

Exposed Fasteners: Heads matching color of sheet metal using plastic caps or factory applied coating. Provide metalbacked EPDM or PVC sealing washers under heads of exposed fasteners bearing on weather side of metal.

Blind Fasteners: High strength aluminum or stainless steel rivets suitable for metal being fastened.

Nails:

Flat head nails barbed at least 1/2 of length, no smaller than No.12 stubs gauge (0.109inch), and of sufficient length to penetrate into wood not less than 7/8inch.

Nails for Fastening Galvanized Steel Sheet Metal: Galvanized steel in accordance with ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM F2329, or Series300 Stainless Steel.

Nails for Fastening Aluminum Sheet Metal: Series300, Stainless Steel.

Screws and Bolts:

General Requirements: Wood screws not less than 12gauge. Machine screws and bolts not less than 1/4inch diameter. Provide neoprene washers at wood screws. Provide metal washers of same material as screws and bolts at machine screws and bolt connections.

Screws and Bolts for Fastening Galvanized Steel Sheet Metal: Galvanized steel in accordance with ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM F2329, or Series300 Stainless Steel.

Screws and Bolts for Fastening Aluminum Sheet Metal: Series 300, Stainless Steel.

SEALANT

General Requirements: Use the following sealants in conjunction with sheet metal materials:

Galvanized and Prefinished Galvanized Steel: 1component polyurethane sealant.

Aluminum: Silicone or 1component polyurethane sealant.

1-Component Polyurethane Sealant:

Applicable Standards: A 1component sealant, in accordance with ASTM C920, TypeS, Grade NS, Class 25, Use M, A, and O as applicable to joint substrates indicated.

Use O Joint Substrates: Aluminum coated with a highperformance coating.

Sealant Related Accessory Materials:

Joint Cleaner, Joint Primer, or Bond Breaker Tape: As recommended and approved by sealant manufacturer and panel system manufacturer.

Sealant Backer Rod (Sealant BackUp) (Cylindrical Sealant Backings): Safrod or Owner approved equal.

Sealant Related Accessory Materials:

Joint Cleaner, Joint Primer, Bond Breaker Tape, and/or Sealant Backer Rod (Sealant Back-Up) (Cylindrical Sealant Backings): As approved by sealant manufacturer.

FABRICATION

General:

Sheet metal installation shall, as a minimum, be in accordance with recommendations of Factory Mutual loss Prevention Data Sheet 149, September 2000.

Fabricate all forms and shapes shown free from defects impairing to strength. Form planes and lines to true alignment. Shop fabricate all items requiring soldering or welding unless noted otherwise.

Recoat soldered joints of color coated sheet metal with material and in manner specified by manufacturer.

SECTION 07 62 00

Sheetmetal work shall be of material and gauge specified, and shaped to be installed in strict accordance with details on Drawings.

Plane surfaces shall be free from waves or buckles.

Turn back exposed metal edges into hemmed edge.

Use elastomeric sealant where necessary to make a watertight installation, including foam backer rod where necessary to make a good sealant joint.

Turn screw fasteners into place rather than driven.

Soldering:

Remove strippable plastic film of color coated sheet metal, and completely remove color coating before soldering.
