Exam Prep Series Proofreading Guidelines

  1. Make sure that no question or reference is broken across two pages.
  1. Ensure that if the question runs into 2 lines, the second line has at least 2 words. Make sure that in the Exams (questions) there are no hyphens at the end of a line. The whole word should be moved onto the next line.
  1. Make sure that the bold/underline is consistent. If two consecutive words are bold and underlined, they must fall on the same line and there should be no underlining between words.
  1. If there is a blank line in the question (______), and it falls onto the next line, there should be one word in front of it on that new line. A blank line should never be the only thing on the new line (same rule as having 2 words on that line).

A.RIGHT: the ______truck

B.WRONG: ______truck

A blank line should never end a line. Either have a word follow it, or run the text down.

  1. Right: The cat sleeps in the _____ room.
  2. Right: The cat sleeps in

the _____ room.

  1. Wrong: The cat sleeps in the _____

room.

  1. Word Structure:

A.Fire fighter is two words; firefighting is one word

B.Fireground is one word

C.Sizeup is one word

D.Replace “Haz Mat” with “Hazardous Materials”

E.As a noun “examination items” as an adjective “examination-item”

  1. Question Structure

A.If the question ends in a question mark, the answer choices should be capitalized. If the answer choice is a complete sentence, it should be appropriately punctuated. See question 30 on page 68 and question 38 on page 69 of Exam Prep: Fire Department Apparatus Driver.

B.If the question is completed by the answer choice, the question should end in a colon and the answer choice should be lower case and punctuated. See question 33 on page 68 of Exam Prep: Fire Department Apparatus Driver.

C.If the answer is a fill-in-the-blank, it should be capitalized if it begins the sentence or is a proper name, but otherwise, it should be lower case with no punctuation. See question 42 on page 69 of Exam Prep: Fire Department Apparatus Driver.

D.“All of the above.” should always be capped with a period.

  1. On pages with a Rule box (or boxes) and a Helpful Hint box (or boxes), all of the Rules should come before the Helpful Hints. (See, for example, pages 2-3 of Exam Prep: Fire Apparatus Driver.)
  1. 5. In the rules and helpful hints, use the % symbol instead of spelling out percent; in text passages, use “percent” instead of %
  1. “Exam” and “Test” should be replaced with “Examination.”The exceptions to this rule: Do not replace “Exam” in “Exam Prep” and leave instances of “exam” in the examination questions. Leave “Test” in “test bank” and “field test”
  1. Please check carefully for spelling, grammar, and consistency. For example, the proofreader for Exam Prep: Fire Apparatus Driver noticed that percentages and fractions were written in many different ways and found some capitalization inconsistencies.
  1. Legally, we cannot change the wording of questions or answers without checking with the author first. Therefore, please fix only consistency issues. If something in a question or answer section sounds awkward or confusing, please write your edit on a sticky note rather than directly on the pages.
