BMC Participation Statement

AMA CLIMBING & MOUNTAINEERING MEET – N WALES 10 – 12 JUNE 2016 APPLICATION FORM AND ADMINISTRATION INSTRUCTION

1. General. The AMA Climbing & Mountaineering Meet is to be held in N Wales and will be based in Llanberis.

2. This instruction provides you with the application (see Annex A), which is used to apply for a place on the weekend and the administrative detail required in which to arrive properly prepared.

3. Aim. The aim of the weekend is three-fold:

a. Conduct single and multi-pitch climbing.

b. Introduce novices to Scrambling on terrain up to Grade 3.

c. Conduct Hill walking activities.

4. Programme of Events. A programme of events is at Annex B.

6. Arrival. All members are expected to arrive on the Friday evening. Priority for the accommodation will go to members who are attending the whole weekend.

7. Briefing. An initial brief will take place at 0900hrs Sat 11 June at the accommodation. All members, without exception, are to attend the briefing.

8. Accommodation and Messing. ‘Bens Bunkhouse’ has been booked for the duration of the weekend, which can sleep up to 18 personnel. Please note that all personnel are required to bring their own bedding/sleeping bag. Rooms are to be left clean and tidy before departure. The cost for the weekend is £20 per person.

9. Meals for the duration of the weekend are an individual responsibility. There are ample cooking facilities within the bunkhouse and there are restaurants located in Llanberis which is less than 1 mile away.

10. Equipment. Individuals must bring their own equipment and clothing, no kit is available from the organiser.

11. Duty Status. Individuals must gain parent unit authority to attend and ensure details of the weekend are placed on Part 1 orders. The meet will be run in accordance with 2010DIN10-009 dated Feb 2010 ‘Mountaineering as Sport’ and frago 01 to OpO 14/002 - The Army’s Approach to ‘Risk to Life’ – Sport and Adventurous Training. The weekend is recognised as an official ASCB event, however travel and subsistence costs must still be authorised by own unit budgets – ask your RAO.

12. Civilians. If you are a civilian member of the AMA then please note you will be required to have liability insurance if you want to undertake rock climbing activities as part of the weekend. This could be in the form of Association of Mountaineering Instructor Membership or upgrading your AMA membership for £15 (for a years cover) The British Mountaineering Council - membership. Please bring proof with you and annotate your return with what cover you will have.

13. Safety. There will be a mandatory brief on the Saturday morning prior to any activities. The conduct of training is viewed very seriously by HQ Army and the AMA, so every measure necessary will be adopted to ensure activities are safe. The meet leader has the authority to restrict individuals if they have insufficient experience.

14. In accordance with best practice, all personnel are required to wear the recognised PPE for practical sessions. Safety briefs and risk assessments must be followed throughout the weekend. Personnel who wish to climb in organised and qualified groups must comply with the following caveats:

a. Personnel are to book out and back in with the meet leader, leaving a list of names, training location and a contact mobile telephone number.

b. Personnel are to use their own equipment and transport.

15. Local Information.

a. N Wales has some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. There is a lifetime of crags and mountains to suit all mountaineering activities and abilities.

b. Pubs. There are various pubs and restaurants located 1 mile from the bunkhouse.

c. Supplies. All necessary supplies can be purchased from shops in Llanberis.

d. Wet Weather. In the event of adverse weather, indoor climbing venues nearby can be used.

16. Points of Contact. Capt Lang is managing all applications for the weekend. Please note that due to financial constraints, once places have been booked, payment is non-refundable. This is due to the AMA paying for the accommodation up front to secure the booking. The only exception to this rule will be if personnel that can no longer attend, nominate a replacement to take their place. In this case a new application and payment must be received prior to the old booking being cancelled. Applications complete with respective payments are to be sent (NLT: 27 May 16) to:
