Sports Report 2009/10
St Crispin’s School students have continued to excel in sport and represent the school with distinction. This year they have shown great commitment, which has been rewarded though their individual and collective achievements.
Firstly, we should highlight the fantastic achievement by Megan Pettit and Lucie Colebeck, both in Year 9, who represented Great Britain at the World Age Games in Russia last November. Megan also represented Great Britain at Synchro Trampolining in the European Championships in Bulgaria earlier this year but unfortunately, she was injured in her second routine and was unable to complete her performance. The school clearly has 2 very talented young ladies and we wish them both every success in their continued development in order to achieve elite success. Watch this space!!
Students continued to gain representative honours this academic year as a result of their dedication to their chosen sports, both within and outside of the school.
At county level, Will Day, James Charlton, Tom Skidmore, Alistair Dickie and Matt Smith all represented Berkshire U18’s at football, playing in the South West Counties and National Championships.
Fern Brereton, in Year 10, represented Berkshire in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships for the 2nd Year in a row and was also crowned Berkshire 1500m Champion at the recent County Championships. Emma Osboune, in Year 8, also became Berkshire Hurdles Champion at the same event. The fact that they were both competing against girls a year older than themselves made the achievements all the more impressive.
Robert Dickie, in Year 9, has maintained his place within the Berkshire U14’s cricket squad and also now captains the U14 Berkshire football squad.
Also in Year 9, Greg Brown and Liam Grealis have represented Berkshire U14’s at Rugby, and Elliott Maddison, in Year 7, has been selected for the U13’s squad for next season.
The school is very proud of all of these fantastic individual achievements which have come about as a result of hard work and endeavour. However, they are not the only pupils who deserve recognition for the contributions that they have made to sport at St. Crispin’s this year.
Our school teams continue to make an impact at local level, with the most recent being in the Wokingham Schools’ Athletic Championships. The Year 8 and 10 boys both finished 2nd to Forest in the overall team competitions but we had numerous individual successes. In Year 10, Matt House and Fern Brereton were victorious in the Javelin and 1500m respectively, Lucie Colebeck, in Year 9, won the hurdles, and in Year 7, Hannah McClay won the high jump. However, it was Year 8 who had the most success with Dan Riddington winning the 1500m’s, Mark Doran the 200m’s, Spenser Challis the Javelin and Emma Osbourne who won both the hurdles and the long jump.
In Rugby the Year 9 boys reached the semi-finals of the County Cup this year after beating Hugh Farringdon in the 1st round. This was then followed by 2 great victories over Forest and Windsor Boys in the next 2 rounds. The boys were finally beaten by a very strong St. Bartholomew’s School one game away from the final. This is a fantastic achievement and the furthest any team has got in the competition for a while.
The Schools 1st 15 also enjoyed an enhanced fixture list this season, with this paying dividend as they reached the ¼ final of the County Cup. Again, a great achievement considering they were unable to train due to lessons after school.
In other Year groups the boys all enjoyed successful seasons. The Year 8 and 10’s continued to show commitment to training resulting in them picking up a number of victories over the season and the new intake Year 7’s were able to regularly field A and B teams in a local league. The department is looking to continue to improve its rugby programme next year and expand its fixture list to include more Independent Schools to enhance the development of all teams.
Football continues to be a real strength of the school with Years 7, 8 and 10 all winning their East Berkshire leagues and making the league play offs. Unfortunately, only the Year 8 team made it into their final but lost to a very strong Forest team.
In the Berkshire Cup, the Year 7 team had an outstanding season, and set to be the team to look out for in the future defeating Dedworth School, Langley Grammar, John Madjeski Academy and Prospect School on their way to the final. Again, like the Year 8 team, they came up against a talented Forest team in the final, eventually losing the game 4 -0. The girls’ football teams also performed very well this season with the Year 7/8 and Year 11 teams both reaching the County Cup semi finals, these being the only games in which they were defeated this year.
Staying with the girls, all year groups had another successful netball season in the Wokingham Schools leagues. Each were successful in beating Emmbrook and Bulmershe and all similarly had tough but competitive games with Luckley and Holt. At the end of each league all 4 teams were entered into the Plate competition with all our teams taking 2nd place in their age group with year 7,8 and 9 narrowly missing out on 1st.
All years have recently enjoyed an extremely successful rounders season with four out of our five teams competing in the Wokingham leagues. In the Wokingham Borough league, the year 10 girls rounders team have put in some exceptional performances against a variety of teams, including their toughest competitors, Luckley. Many of these girls, aside from playing, have used their strong skills to coach the younger teams. The Year 7 and 8 teams have shown outstanding commitment to clubs this year and after a number of cancelled matches the Year 8 team kicked off with a strong start. In the tournament they won all of their games in their group, beating a strong Luckley team in the process. Unfortunately, we narrowly missed out on winning, coming runners up to the reigning champions, the Holt and Abbey.
This year has also seen the continued development of girls’ cricket. Cricket had been added to the girls’ curriculum last year, which ever since, has grown in popularity. Thanks to links with the England Cricket Board, the girls have been fortunate enough to receive regular coaching from Jack Fisher and England Women’s Captain Charlotte Edwards. The Year 7 and 8 girls have experienced coaching in some of their lessons and as a result played and won a close fought match against Maiden Erlegh.
In addition a strong U15 team participated in the Lady Taverner’s Berkshire tournament beating Emmbrook, LVS and Maiden Erlegh. The enthusiasm the girls have shown for cricket has been fantastic with Charlotte Edwards, as a role model, being an excellent influence. Seven Girls were scouted by Charlotte Edwards as Gifted and Talented in cricket, they were :
Sophie Coles.
Steph Seear
Tapiwa Madzingira
Joy Westlake
Becky Webb
Morgan Merryweather
Morgan and Becky have since joined successful cricket teams as a result.
Following the success of last year’s hockey squad team, we entered an Under 13’s and Under 15’s team in the Wokingham schools’ hockey league. It has been a successful season for both age groups with some notable wins against local secondary schools Maiden Erlegh and Bulmershe. Many of our hockey girls have now joined local teams with Joy Westlake (Year 10) playing for Bracknell ladies and Jenna Smith, Luka Price, Mary Acari and Caitlin Devereux (Year 11) all playing for Wokingham Ladies. Their success doesn’t end there as Jenna has shown continued success and has recently been promoted to the 1st eleven along with earning herself a sponsor.
St. Crispin’s would like to congratulate all of the students mentioned in the report and the teams and their members who have made such excellent collective progress throughout the year. We look to continue to develop the talented athletes that we have here at St. Crispin’s and to further their opportunities to display their considerable ability.
Hopefully next year we will be celebrating and sharing even more success stories as St. Crispin’s sport continues to go from strength to strength.
