From The Principal
WelcomeWe extend a warm welcome to Mrs Simone Whyatt who has returned from leave. Simone is working with the year 2 class.
All classes have settled quickly this term. I have enjoyed hearing about some of the exciting trips and experiences some children had during the break. Term 3 is another busy term and is 10 weeks long.
Maintenance
There was a small amount of maintenance conducted over the vacation period. The galvanised tank has been drained and is no longer used for drinking water. One of the small tanks beside the Prep storage shed was drained due to stagnant water and sludge. The gutters on the Prep storage shed and sandpit rooftops were cleared of debris. A number of pavers were removed from the front entrance to the school to reduce trip hazard. Fortunately, all these jobs were able to be completed at no cost to the school.
Lead Principal visit
Mr Jeff Munce, Lead Principal Metropolitan Small Schools, visited the school on Tuesday. Mr Munce praised student behaviour stating Minden children are among the friendliest and courteous he has met. He also commented positively on the school’s curriculum program and the way in which all staff are provided with support to build their capacity.
Cluster Athletics Carnival (BVSSSA)
Congratulations to our team of students who participated in this annual event. They performed admirably. Well done Indeanna who received Age Champion. Minden retained the highest points shield for the eighth year in a row!
Lockyer Athletics Carnival
Students who placed at the BVSSSA carnival will be nominated to participate in the Lockyer District Carnival taking place on Wednesday 26 July. Relevant paperwork will be distributed as information is provided to the school.
Student Safety
A friendly reminder regarding student safety before school. Children accessing the school grounds prior to 8:30am should attend the OSHC service. Bus students are supervised in the year 5/6 classrooms upon arrival. From 8:30 onwards, all students are supervised in the Sports Centre.
Does your child know how they are getting home?
Please ensure your child knows how they are getting home each afternoon. We understand that circumstances change and consequently, it is vital that the school or OSHC is notified of any new arrangement. Students who normally travel by bus will be put on the bus unless an adult has informed the school otherwise.
Staff absences
A number of staff will be participating in a variety of professional development days over the next few weeks. Disruptions will be kept to a minimum as we have secured regular supply teachers as replacements.
School Opinion Survey
It’s that time of year again. Staff, students in years 5 and 6 and a random sample of parents / carers will participate in the 2017 suite of surveys. Parents / carers identified through the OneSchool selection tool will receive a pale blue coloured slip of paper with the website and codes for accessing this year’s survey. The codes can only be used once. Parents / carers who do not have access to the internet are welcome to complete the survey using school computer resources. Please call the office if this applies to you.
Are you getting enough sleep?
We know that sleep is the one of the building blocks of mental health and wellbeing. Many children and just about all teenagers are sleep-deprived at the moment. Many parents are sleep-deprived as well!
Children need between 10 and 12 hours’ sleep to enable proper growth and development, while teenagers need a minimum of nine hours. One of the single most powerful strategies to improve kids’ abilities to cope with stressful or changing situations is to ensure they get enough sleep.
Here’s 10 tips for helping children sleep from Sherene Alfreds, developer of Dinosnores Sleepy Stories:
1. Have a regular bedtime.
2. Make the bedroom comfortable dark place to sleep, with no television or other electronic devices
3. Have a regular calming bedtime routine - bath, teeth, and books.
4. Avoid the "I can't sleep" argument. Ask children to "lie down and rest their bodies" instead of telling them to "go to sleep".
5. Avoid TV, computer or electronic games after dinner, they have all been found to make sleep more difficult.
6. Get the kids out exercising in the day to help them sleep at night.
7. Avoid caffeine and sugar saturated foods.
8. Consider dropping daytime naps as your child gets older.
9. Talk to your doctor to rule out medical causes of sleep difficulties.
10. During the holidays, anticipate some disruption at bedtime if you are changing your family routine. And give yourselves and your children permission to find bedtime challenging. An enormous 30-40% of young and school-aged children have sleeping difficulties. It takes time to develop a bedtime routine - so be kind to yourself and your kids.
Teacher Profile
Amy Harrison- Curriculum LeaderMy name is Amy Harrison and I have been a teacher at Minden State School for the past 6 years. I graduated University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Education- Primary and Middle School. I started my teaching career in a year 6 classroom at Mt Crosby State School and was fortunate enough to secure a permanent position at Minden a year later. This year I have stepped into the role of Curriculum Leader. I love every moment of it, working with all our amazing teachers and admin staff. My passion has always been around curriculum and pedagogy. The best parts of my day are watching children experience success and supporting our amazing teachers to deliver high quality teaching programs to our students. Education has always been a passion of mine and I am grateful every day that I get to be a part of so many students’ and teachers’ educational journeys.
I currently live in Brisbane with my husband and fur baby but grew up in Toowoomba. I enjoy reading and spending quality time with my family and friends. I hope to do a little more travelling in the future and continue my career in Education.
